I really do apologise in advance if this post contains TMI but I really want to share something I’ve discovered over the past few weeks.
I have been suffering really really badly with a racing heart and palpitations, dizziness, extreme bloating and extremely extreme burping after I eat, that goes on for 1-2 hours. This has been going on for years but has reached unbearable levels over the last few years and in the last few months. It’s ruining my life. I’ve cut out loads of foods and tried all manner of weird and wonderful things to no avail.
Anyway about 3 weeks ago it was happening really bad after breakfast and I was looking for breakfast ideas and came across a recipe for overnight oats with Chia seeds in. I’ve never had them before or overnight oats so I made a batch and loved them.
On day 3 I was woken up at 6.30 am needing the loo 💩 😂sorry, very personal I know but bear with me. Every single day since then I’ve woken up at roughly the same time every morning needing the loo. Apart from two days when I didn’t have the oats and I didn’t. When I go to the loo it’s also very different, shall we just say it’s exactly as it should be. 🥴
I have to say that not immediately but definitely in the 2nd week I noticed less burping and swelling. It’s not gone completely but it is less. I have to be careful of carbs and sugar still but my tummy feels less sensitive.
Ive looked online and chia seeds are a prebiotic “ a non-digestible food ingredient that promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the intestines.” I had no idea.
This has been very much an accidental discovery and god knows if it will last but it has definitely helped me going to the loo 💩 sorry couldn’t resist 😂
Wonder if anyone else has found anything at all that helps in any way whatsoever with the terrible burping, bloating heart racing thing?

I also burp etc when i have palpitations. I eat Chia seeds and have them sometimes for breakfast, although not noticed if they reduce palpitations. I found that cutting right back on wheat and dairy helps me a lot though.
My burping and racing heart follows the same pattern every time it happens and it is different from my arrhythmias. The chia seeds haven’t had any impact I’m aware of on my PAF but it does seem like the burping, bloating racing heart episodes are less.
The real difference though is my gut and digestive system seems to be working really well if you know what I mean. 🥴 and I wonder if that is helping with those episodes?
The seeds are soaked overnight with the oats in almond milk, they look like tapioca.
I make overnight oats too and include chia seeds and hemp seeds (and nuts, coconut flakes, cranberries, sun-dried sultanas and almond milk & serve them in the morning with fresh berries). On other days throw the seeds into a protein shake or have them on top of Greek yogurt with berries and nuts. I made a cottage pie the other day and threw a handful of chia seeds in with the mince (as well as kale, spinach, carrot and zucchini). Chia seeds are really good for you and very versatile.
Hi Kelly, I don't think its the Chia seeds but the overnight soaking of grains. Clearly your gastro system is crying out for some attention and I can do no better than recommending a very popular 'bible' called 'Nourishing Tradition' westonaprice.org/book-revie...
I actually really think it’s the seeds, when the changes to my bowel habits happened I googled chia seeds and they are a really good support for you gut. Being a Scot ive eaten oats a plenty, not soaked mind you. Maybe a combination of both 😊
There is a lot of evidence that links sugar to inflammation, is a direct cause of diabetes type 2, is linked to Altzheimers and is a cause of sticky red blood cells leading to clogged arteries. I am struck by the number of people joining this site and the heart foundation who are having heart attacks and then finding their arteries are completely clogged. They are the lucky one's who survive the 'widowmaker' caused by one particular blocked artery.
The usual result is to insert a stent, prescribe pills and send the patient on their way. Very rarely a thorough review of what the patient's lifestyle is doing to them so that the glycation continues, as measured by HbA1c or simply A1C. The Norfolk Cancer study found that there is a clear link between elevated A1C and all cause death rates, particularly cardio vascular disease. If your A1C measurement is high then your chances of dying soon are greatly enhanced.
Complex carbs drive the whole process. You are what you eat is certainly true with hidden or overt sugar consumption. So lose the sugar in all it's many forms
broadly, yes as far as I can. It used to be very easy to avoid it as I have avoided wheat products ( I am intolerant of it), and recently milk as well. However the introduction of free from foods, breads, cakes and biscuits has made sugar much more available and much more tempting. Ginger biscuits, chocolate cakes, pasta, Ancient grain breads, Bourbon Biscuits, Pikelets, etc, are all available .
Generally I try and avoid all of them if I can. Porridge and pumpkin seeds for breakfast, Meat/ fish and 2 or3 veg for lunch, and a light evening meal like beans on toast. If you are looking for meal ideas visit the diabetes website, it makes for interesting reading
Thanks so much for that. You make it sound very doable. I am quite a healthy eater but I have a very sweet tooth. Thanks for the tip I will have a look 😊
