Hawthorn/Apixaban, is it safe to take both. I understand that Hawthorn could stop A.F.

I don't know enough about Hawthorn myself, but I would NEVER take any sort of supplement without consulting a medical professional. Pharmacists are the experts in this sort of thing I think and in my experience are often better than GPs at knowing what is safe to take with what.

Edited to say: see Vipec 's post today 'Omega-3 oils and bisoprolol -Article in the Times' and what it says there (in the article) about taking medication together with supplements.

You are so right - both about consulting a medical professional and about pharmacists being the best informed.

CornPoppy,

I take NAC 2 600mg a day, 2 Natokkinase (anti-coag and clot remover)/day, 2 vitamin E per day and 1 turmeric. these are my blood thinners period. I take 3 x 600mg of hawthorne daily. As to interactions, I do not find that there are any known, but thinner + thinner makes it more thin, so how about cutting back on the Apixaban amount? See this link from a group in Australia.

Eliquis and English hawthorn drug interactions - from FDA reports

There is no drug interactions reported by people who take Eliquis and English hawthorn together yet. This review analyzes the effectiveness and drug interactions between Eliquis and English hawthorn. It is created by eHealthMe based on reports from FDA, and is updated regularly

I got off of Warfarin and also Digoxin and Liisipril. I haven't felt this good in years.

I am thinking of going back on the nattokinase/E/fishoil and adding turmeric (not sure about NAC?). After several episodes of AF 2017 cardiologist put me on Eliquis 5mg bid (however I only take 2 1/2mg bid because I am scared of it plus if I weigh 145lbs and need 5mgs bid how come my neighbor who weighs 175 takes that dose?) but after reading info on if you stop taking Eliquis you WILL have a stroke I am concerned about totally stopping it, maybe weaning off while adding the nattokinase? Btw I have been taking Hawthorn for many years to keep my heart strong, its a wonderful herb.

Brit1,

It's a tough call on natural versus prescribed meds, particularly the thinner issue due to clots. I reduced slowly and didn't go cold turkey when I stopped the warfarin. Good luck on your change to natural substances. I take the NAC too and hav eonly just started taking it again after a lapse of 3 months due to trying to quantify what works for me versus what doesn't. Definitely helps my sinuses and so I breathe better. I take at night before bedtime and I sleep longer with fewer periods of waking up due to apnea. I find the NAC makes me have a back of the throat feeling due to it's sulfer content making me a bit uncomfortable for about 20-m so I take a small crackler or two after taking to help calm it down.

I also take Hawthorn twice daily.

Not what you're looking for?
