Dr Sanjay Gupta..Ectopic heart beats..Getting rid of them for good
Finvola , you have ectopics, don't you? Or is my memory failing as well as my heart? 😀
Spot on P0rtnahapp1e - mine come in bouts and anxiety is a big factor in coping with AF.
In the years before I was diagnosed, I coped with 'these funny turns' by mostly ignoring them. Once I knew it was caused by my heart, anxiety went into hyperdrive.
The awful thing about stress/anxiety - we often don't know that we stressed.
How are you keeping? Scunnered by rain, perhaps!! xx
Was out your way yesterday, and thought about you as I passed the turnoff to St Aidan's church. (I always imagine that you live in that area!)
I've been reasonably well, except when I have a whole day of looking after my daughter's toddlers, aged 2 and 3, as yesterday when I took them to a Teddy Bears Picnic in Carrowmena activity centre.
Their parents weren't home until 9.30 and it makes it a long day. I struggle to change nappies or to catch them when they run in opposite directions and get very weak and breathless. I'm turning into the grandma from hell!
Thank you for posting this Steve - I wish I could give it 50 likes.
Thank you Steve such a positive post, I watch Dr Gupta on U Tube.
Thanks Steve for posting the link
Not sure I fully understand, is SG saying we originally began getting ectopics because of our fear.... or that individual ectopic episodes are fear related.
I don't know when I began getting ectopics and only really noticed them when I started having episodes of PAF which is definitely exacerbated by fear/anxiety .
The ectopics I experience now are not 'fear induced' because I get them when I am relaxed or after sleep but I ignore them as being nothing to worry about. The fact that I am not stressed of fearful does not prevent me from getting them though.
That is exactly what he was saying.
Sometimes we don't know we have anxiety - I split it into 2 groups - the conscious worriers - people who have worry thoughts and know it, and who are actually much easier to treat.
And those who are not in awareness of their anxiety and who don't consciously worry but have physical stress - brought on by all sorts of things - crisis trauma such as being in a war zone, involved in terrorist event, major accident, over exercising the body, living with chronic low level stress, physical trauma through damage to the spinal cord - often undetected, people who somatise stress (I put myself in this category).
I find this category much harder to treat (as a psychotherapist) as you end up 'chasing the pain'. I.e. As soon as you think you are getting to the root cause and one symptom clears, another pops up somewhere else! This type of person has often had pre-verbal physical or emotional trauma - i.e. Before speech developed.
I find hands on touch, massage, energy medicine most useful for this type of person.
It is all about how our body reacts and how resilient we are, our thoughts are an important part of that but we also process through our dreams and that is often when ectopics and Arrythmia strike.
I absolutely agree with Dr Gupta that anxiety can certainly irritate ectopics and that reduced anxiety levels can be very helpful. That being said, I think it is a bit misleading to imply that ectopics can be eliminated entirely by managing anxiety. I never had the level of ectopics that I have now until after I had my second ablation, nor specifically related to anxiety per se. While my AFIB has been successfully treated 😀(for now), the frequency and intensity of my ectopics has increased substantially 😦. Sometimes ectopics happen for a variety of reasons, not just anxiety.
Good food for thought
Give me a break. If one more idiot tells me my issue is anxiety I will effing scream!!! 'A bit uncomfortable'??? You know shit unless you have them. Tell me how you feel after you have 12,000 PVC's a day, Dr. Gupta!!!!! Granted stress and digestive issues don't help PVC's/PAC's.. but you're not telling me anything new here, doc...just wasting my time. Go do some research on L-Arginine and L-Carnitine and Taurine and CoQ and magnesium LIKE I DID to get my PVC's/PAC's to either zilch or less than a dozen a day and then you will have some NEW news for us. Nothing helped me until I started taking these supplements. So much for your anxiety theory..... and you people go, oh yeah, that's it.... that's NOT it all the time. So did you manage to stop them by reducing anxiety and stress?? Maybe to SOME degree and probably mind over matter for a bit...but it's mainly because of intacellular deficiencies that blood work cannot accurately detect ....long story ...but doc, stop wasting my time. Stop trying to just stay relevant unless you really got something that a million other docs haven't already said before you and isn't any help at all!
