I don't - however I saw news of his passing due to "Cancer' on dozens of sites. It was only after looking around a bit that I finally found what kind of cancer.

Why don't these reports say Prostate Cancer to raise awareness? I guess I have a burr under the saddle as this weekend, someone i know found out I have PC and the comment was "That's the best kind of Cancer for men to have as you won't die from it" - i can't count how many times I've heard that.

Where was prostate cancer mentioned?

"Why don't these reports say Prostate Cancer to raise awareness?"

Excellent point.

1. Because it involves "private parts"

2. Because part of the standard treatments lower testosterone, making the patient look & feel less manly. The patient does not wish to advertise this condition (weakness) in his workplace.

3. Because they don't know how to spell or pronounce "prostate"

An obit article in the New York Times says the N.B.A. said he died of colon cancer.

First off early in the day it was unconfirmed he died from prostate cancer. NBA officially announced he died from colon cancer later in the day. Bill did not die from prostate cancer.

Yep. It's both an urban and a rural legend.

When I went in for a biopsy, they were looking to confirm Mesothelioma. When I woke up from the procedure, they said it was likely Prostate Cancer stage 4 in my clavicle and on some ribs. I literally celebrated. Prostate Cancer is a beotch, but it is considered different. I am going on 8 years survival. Meso, you are lucky if you go fast.

He lived life to the fullest. Saw him at a Grateful Dead concert in Santa Clara about 10 years ago with a tie-die shirt and signature headband just having fun. RIP!

Something called "Larry Brown Sports" said he had prostate cancer. However, I defer to The New York Times:

Bill Walton, a center whose extraordinary passing and rebounding skills helped him win two national college championships with U.C.L.A. and one each with the Portland Trail Blazers and Boston Celtics of the N.B.A., and who overcame a stutter to become a loquacious commentator, died on Monday at his home in San Diego. He was 71.

The N.B.A. said he died of colon cancer.

I concur. Seems like some celebrities just say died of cancer and don’t reveal specifics. I get it’s personal but it would be a great time to build more awareness.

I concur 100%. Theirs is no such thing as an easy cancer and more education, awareness and screenings are needed as we are truly Al yeast 10 years behind vs breast ca beer awareness and screenings.

It’s not just celebrities. I occasionally look at the obits and it’s rare to see that the deceased died of cancer and even more rare to see the type of cancer. It’s usually something like they died ‘after a long illness’. I know it’s a very personal thing, and intrusive, for those supplying the information for the obits and they are in mourning but it would be a way for their deceased love one’s death to possibly help others. When my time comes I’m going to insist that the specific cause of my death is revealed in my obit.

I used to be his UPS man when he lived in West Linn, OR on the river... and lucky me, I'm a Gleason 9 and now 5 yrs post treatment.

When I hear about all these famous wealthy people dying of PC... it makes me think... "if there was a cure, these people would have found it" ...they have the money to due diligence.

The public does need to start learning about these PC cases and deaths... Austin at the pentagon, MLK Jr last year and the many others

Yes, I don't think the medical community is intentionally hiding a secret cure. Ask the scientists who have dedicated their careers in search of cures.

Do you know of some specific scientists who have dedicated their careers to searching for a cure? It would be nice to share that list or a few names for those of us who are researching. Appreciate it if you know some off hand. Thank you.

Several years ago a soon retiring female scientist/Doc was interviewed by PBS about her LONG career doing just that. She was very clear that over something like 29 years in the field, she felt that progress had been relatively very small. Try Google if you want names......if I thought it would do any good for any current patient, including me, I'd take a stab. AI might also provide such names.....Knight Cancer Center here, and others around the country, have such scientists......maybe try NIH too.

Curious Scottybear. Have you been PSA undetectable since your treatment? I'm a Gleason 9 also. Had RP and then salvage radiation. About to complete 2 years of Lupron/Abi/Prednisone. Hoping I'm cured but remaining realistic.

One of the best centers and team players ever. I love when he and Larry Bird teamed up and the Celtics won the NBA Championship in 1986.....RIP, Bill

Just for the record, Two Titles. In '74 UCLA lost to NC State in the semis.

You never forget your high school sports highlights or favorite songs....

I deleted the post. You're absolutely right! I had veered back to Kareem's years. Sorry about that. I was there, just failing memory and fast fingers.

I would also like to know more details about notable figure PC deaths - you would think money was not an issue and they were working hard on it. OJ Simpson for example. King Charles and Lloyd Austin - what's their case? How was it uncovered and what stage and what treatment etc.

fluffyfur profile image
fluffyfur in reply tojackwfrench

Does King Charles have PC? It's not confirmed whatsoever.
