Your friend did not fail surgery. Surgery failed him. I adore how we physicians pervert the language to put disappointing outcomes into the patient. Surgery failed him.

Your friend may want to consider Walter M Stadler, MD at the University of Chicago. There is nothing I know of that would prevent him from seeing more than one physician. Some years ago I selected what seemed online to be well-educated, experienced physicians at each of three locations--Northwestern, U of Chicago, and NorthShore Medical Systems--and met with each of them to obtain their recommendations. To my surprise, each recommended a different approach. I chose to follow Dr. Stadler's advice, which corresponded with advice I had received earlier at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
