Many posts here recommend seeing a prostate cancer oncologist specialist. Currently, I'm seeing a hematology oncologist with the Lahey Health Systems, Boston area hospitals and clinics. I keep Dana-Farber in the loop as second opinion, as Lahey Health Systems is much more approachable.
Seems to me, general medical oncologists, get overwhelmed with advanced prostate diagnosis. Perhaps, it's because other cancer types with similar metastasis or stage 4 dogma - suggests terminal prognosis in general
From my exhaustive research and this forum, prostate cancer is resembling more of a HIV type of chronic disease than other cancer types.
The Harvard hospitals have some of the best medical oncologists who specialize in prostate cancer. Matthew Smith, Christopher Sweeney, and Mary-Ellen Taplin come to mind.
What criteria do you use to rate MOs as best for PCa in particular? I ask because there are no MOs near me who specialize in PCa and when I need one I fear not using one who is completely current on tx modalities.
Thank you so much, I heard about Mary Taplin, will set up a visit. I'm a bit bias towards female physicians, they seem to have more innate compassion...
My urologist knows a lot about PCa. I've been going to a hematologist/oncologist at Florida Hospital for 11 years. I no long show signs of PCa after 6 1/2 years of Lupron and 72 radiations. The hematologist can give me blood test results at the same visit. I wish you well.
My husband has a 'team' of medical specialists that we have hand-picked. He has an excellent Urologist (was chief resident at the Mayo Clinic, and is up-to-date on all of the latest and greatest), a Stanford MO, and a local (Reno) Hemotologist/Oncologist for administering all chemo, etc, and his local GP. The Stanford MO is the leader of the team. We feel that this will give him the best of all worlds.
