My husband PSA has been rising after Prostatectomy. A recent PET Scan showed cancer cells in the Prostate bed, but the MRI didn't pick-up any disease. The Oncologist is checking labs, and will start my husband on HT.Question for the group. Why would PET scan pick-up cancer cells, and not the MRI?

I am not a doctor. I have PCa and have had both the MRI and PSMA PET scans. My understanding is that the PSMA PET scan is much more sensitive to prostate cancer cells, while an MRI is showing the organs. MRI is useful for finding tumors on the prostate, seminal vesicles, lymph nodes, and maybe bones, but it's only about 75% accurate and can miss things. The PSMA PET scan will light up any prostate cells anywhere in the body and can find smaller groups of cells.
