Maddening Contradictory Advice

Latest update on my still hormone sensitive lymph nodes-only but widespread metastatic cancer is the Dexa scan showing I now have Osteopenia (no doubt occasioned by ADT regimen and lack of Testosterone). I’ve been told I need to get 1500 mg absorbable Calcium per day to prevent further lumbar region bone density deterioration. Meanwhile, I keep reading about how too much Calcium and Vitamin D3 not only causes/feeds Prostate Cancer, but also risks causing problematic artery calcification (history of cardiac concerns). Injectables like Prolia for bone density appear to be both financially and side effects toxic too. What to do?

Your sources regarding D3 are not accurate. Too many people here, including myself, supplement D3 to bring it to a higher serum concentration as it is believed to impede somehow PCa progression. Risk of calcification is valid, but can be addressed by taking along vitamin K2. In fact, most D3 supplements contain also K2 for this reason.

Maybe it was the Vitamin B12 someone on this forum said ‘feeds’ the cancer (taken by me because I’m mostly vegan), or the aspirin, taken for cardiac reasons?

You are right, B12 is better to be avoided. Baby Aspirin is a blood thinner, consequently it makes a bit more difficult for the cancerous cells to stick together setting up new colonies, i.e. metastasizing.

Needing to get the RDA of calcium is different from taking supplements over and above natural intake. Bony fish like sardines are a good natural source. Supplement only if you have low serum calcium and your food doesn't provide enough.

I’ll check on that serum level, thanks- only know that my bone density went way down on Relugolix & Apalutamide). But I am finding it challenging to always get Cal 1500 measurable mg per day from food only.

I don't know where you are getting your information but calcium and D3 do not interfere with Pca. I have been on xgeva, calcium and D3 for years.

my MO has me taking D3 and Calcium supplements. Also on Zometa (similar to Xgeva). All for bones. Due to both impact of ADT and impact of metastatic bone lesions. Not aware of effects you reference.

Can I ask at what dosages of CA and D3?

3000 d3 and 1200 calcium citrate

I just had my second Dexa and only have osteopenia in my femoral necks and my left one improved since my last scan and my right one got slightly worse. I'll stick with the calcium and D3 for now and up my game on exercises to build that specific bone back. Hoping for better on both in 2 years.
