I have done 1 year with Zometa alongside Docetaxel and more recently Radium 223.
I'm halfway through the Radium 223 course but have been advised that after a year, Zometa has reached maximum effectiveness and should be stopped. After a rocky start I'm feeling much better and much less frail.
Does anyone have any views on taking Radium as a sole therapy without the bone strengthening Zometa?
Thanks

My urologist had chosen XGEVA (Denosumab) + Calcium/D3 instead of Zometa right from the beginning. Got it also during my Radium 223 therapy and following therapies. Probably until my life ends. 🙃
But I wonder if XGEVA and and Radium 223 interfere, because at the end of the Radium 223 therapy my bone scan didn't show any improvement. (I have no proof for such a hypothesis)
My oncologist wants me on bone strengthening medication like Zometa during Xofigo. He believes that the radiation could rupture the bones during Xofigo. I don't know about you as you are saying that your bones are now OK? Did you had a recent dexa scan? What is your T Score now? Are you osteopotic now? I don't really know but I should get Zometa in order to improve my bones. My T score is - 2.5 or even worse now.
I’ve had Zometa continuously every 3 months for several years, including a round of (successful) xofigo and now chemo. In fact my next infusion will be both Zometa and chemo back to back on the same day. Never had any issues.
This trial shows that all men taking hormone therapy for mCRPC are at high risk for fracture, but particularly if they use Xofigo, and if they previously used corticosteroids (e.g., with chemotherapy). The effect on bone continues after Xofigo is stopped. These are predominantly "fragility" fractures, not metastasis-related, and can be prevented with bone-strengthening agents like Xgeva or Zometa.
