I analysed the food I ate for carbohydrates and tried to stay below 30grams/day. So you mainly eat vegetables, meat, cheese, eggs, berries, salad and protein bread or rolls. And drink water, coffee, tea or dry wine.
Did you regain the weight? I can't reconcile using Keto to lose, then abandoning it to go back to earlier habits. In other words, Keto doesn't seem like a lifestyle change, just a temporary solution.
Not criticizing, just trying to understand how people use Keto. I do agree it works for temporary weight loss.
Thanks, didn't mean to seem critical. I have dabbled in Keto in past periods, but not since being diagnosed. I doubt I could stay on it very long. I'll read through that study.
I guess I accept that metastatic PCa is incurable, so if something works, but cannot be maintained for long periods, or indefinitely, it may ultimately be of limited benefit. But as long as it does no harm (some maintain that it does, also not proven), it's probably fine.
After 4 years on the plant-based diet, I certainly wouldn't argue that it proves anything on the cancer fight, but it's worked out well metabolically for me, and I have made it a lifestyle change. But not everyone is as enamored of it!
Personally, I’d be VERY cautious doing keto with PCa. Depending on what stage you’re cancer is at you may find that a diet that’s very high in fat is contraindicated.
My advice would be to take a couple initial PSA reading to establish your baseline reading and monitor the change (not the absolute value) at a high frequency. I’d start off with monthly tests.
If your PSA rate of change is stable, maybe consider testing at 3 months.
Couldn't get Keto to work for me but have had great luck with intermittent fasting. Keep up the good work. I am down 20 in last 2 months, now off on vacation to Costa Rica. Eating healthy and working out will be easy at the resort, however booze will be a problem
Diets work, that’s why they’re so popular. But usually not for long.
Eating less is more important that what you’re eating. I exercise intensely and often, and eat what I want limiting only carbs, sugar and obvious poison like processed food, cured meats etc.
Beyond that I accept a little fat, I’m getting old. In and of itself it’s not the health threat that it’s made out to be.
Try Mediterranean. Get rid of simple carbs. Keep the complex. Lots of fresh veggies a fruits. Chicken and fish. I lost almost 70 pounds over 6 month time three years ago. Keeping it off. .
Yes I've had great luck on whole food plant based diet. Glad you distinguished between simple and complex carbs, as that distinction usually gets lost.
strict keto will peel off the pounds in two or three months but it’s not sustainable. Once you lose the weight you can go back to a healthy diet. I lost twenty pounds and felt good but looked rather gaunt. Got rid of my titties and belly fat. It didn’t stop the cancer from progressing. I put a few pounds back on and look better. Went from 165 to 145. Now about 153. Don’t skip weights and cardio. Good luck
My advice would be to treat yourself and plan on spending some money. Meat is expensive. So are veggies. So is everything! What works for me is keeping the diet varied so it's not a drag. Last night I made hot wings in the oven. Tonight is salmon. Love pork chops and anything from the crock pot, which I make into a soup after taking the meat out. My soup is just the broth, onions and celery (no carrots or spuds, too many carbs). It's yummy, almost no calories and lasts nearly a week. Fill up on salads and veggies.
The beer money I save helps pay for food I would otherwise consider consider extravagant, and you have to keep it interesting. If I really crave carbs, I'll have 4-5 croutons and that satisfies the urge.
I've lost 25 lbs and have another 50 to go, but eating keto isn't really a problem - there are a lot of possibilities just eating simple meats and vegetables (and cheese and eggs and snacking nuts and spicy pork rinds and...).
As a bonus, you get tons of energy. I'm on keto because, aside from the gym, it's the only thing that makes me feel alive again and not a slug on the couch. For me it's practically mandatory. Night and day.
Hey Ray, have you tried it long enough? It takes a good week or two to really get into ketosis, maybe a little longer. Once you're in though, it's pretty awesome. There are a million schools of thought, but keto works best for me. I'm 70 and still kickin' it.
Bruce, that might be the case. I should try for two weeks. I just bought a bunch of nuts fron costco to snack on. 68 here, and still very active. Trying hard to stay that way.
If you give it a shot, understand that you'll feel a little down with low energy for a couple days while your body is getting rid of all the glycogen and switching to burn fat (keto flu). Probably why you were fainting at the gym. Come out the other side though, and I think you'll find a significant (very noticeable) increase in energy and mood. It's worth it in my book.
I don't take cheat "days," occasionally cheat "meals." I'll sometimes have a burger and fries or pizza or something. Lost my taste for sweets 20 yrs ago so I don't have to deal with that. When I cheat on a single meal it only takes a day or two to get back into the swing of things. Keto test strips from Nurse Hattie (Amazon) are cheap and really helpful to see how you're doing. And super motivating when they start turning dark and you know you're burning hot!
After 6 years of ADT I was having trouble with BP, cholesterol and blood glucose numbers continually creeping up. I have had success with whole food, plant based life style. Less joint pain, BP and cholesterol numbers have came back to livable numbers , I lost a little weight but wasn’t really trying to. I have more energy which has helped with getting enough exercise to stay in reasonably good health.
Keto diet can definitely burn off the accumulated fat. And you don’t need to supplement fat. Just keep carbohydrates below 25 grams and try to get sufficient protein. Think meats, non starchy veggies and salads. But you will still likely lose some muscle along with the fat. So it is not a forever program. Once the excess fat is gone must return to more sustainable carbs of 50-100 Gm/day and plenty of protein to put the muscle mass back on. Along with intense resistance training. Been there and have done that successfully. Check DietDoctor.com for free info. Paul
Hi. I use BW pure 95 Whey Protein Isolate. 25gr mixed well with water, 3 times a day. You will lose a lot of weight with this but be careful not to lose it too fast. Weigh yourself daily
I was struggling with my keto diet too, sometimes, it's a lot of work to stay committed. In the hard moments, I try to follow this custom-made keto diet: noeffortbetterbody.blogspot...
