Bone Pain!

I'm experiencing some bone pain, again, on the upper wing of one of my hips. I'm waiting to get radiation--simulation early next week! In the mean time, I'm looking for a way to put the fire out enough for it to be less distracting. I'm on 4g of Acetaminophen daily and weaning off Oxycodone (down to only 5mg a day) because of surgical pain (I'm recovering from back surgery as the orthopedic guys removed a nasty tumor from my nerve roots late last month). I have a lidocaine patch on the area now, but it's not 100 percent effective. I tried some topical CBD but I don't think it penetrates well. Any other ideas, guys?

Wish I had something to offer but looking forward to replies. Hope you find something that helps.

I’ve had that … I know how awful it can get. Just a thought, but , maybe you could put off weaning off oxy until you get the tumor killing radiation. Oxy could keep you comfortable until then. Then back to weening off. Just say’in.

❤️❤️❤️

Thank you, that's definitely a thought. My PCP is very anti narcotics so we'll see if I can get more of them. I'm squirreling a few away for car rides, etc.!

They are anti narcotics to prevent abuse...but bone pain is not abuse but very real need.I took care of my dying mom who had multiple vertebrae fractures and constant pain. Her PCP was an excellent internest and tried the same, to wean her off. I showed him the xrays and reports and asked him if she was going to get better and have less pain? He agreed she wasn't and realized narcotics have a place, though the government mandates and guidelines didn't take into account individual cases. One shoe doesn't fit all. She continued them until she passed.

ask your pcp for Vicodin instead , just until you get the met killer rads. PCP’s are usually more receptive to those , they’ll tide you over, and they’ll eliminate your withdrawal issues while you use them. For kripes sake , you must be classified “ palliative care “ , opiates should be automatic if needed. You might ask for some attention from your pain management team available thru your oncologist or pcp. My pcp is the same way. Your pcp would be glad to move the opiates to another provider.

❤️❤️❤️

Interestingly, I’m still classified “ hospice “ in my records even tho I’m really palliative ( imho ) , it causes some strange stares in some of my clinics from the nursing staff…. at my Kaiser, once you get that initial diagnosis put in your record… it just doesn’t go away, seems like. I do appreciate the preferential treatment that classification gives me though.. yayahahaha no waiting for me , lots of smiling faces and hugs in the clinics. 😂😂😂

Good thought. I might ask to be referred to the "pain clinic" which she has offered to me. It sounds like an awful place!

Modern pain management clinics are usually filled with nice people happy to help you. They see all kinds of terminal cancer patients, not just aPCa. They are experienced helping you.

Yep. Understood, they just need a new name! (I was trying to be funny.)

Sorry, like Kal, I’ve been there. Radiation helps in the longer term, but in the meantime, suffering is daily. This may sound odd, but diphenhydramine (Benadryl) may help. It is not only an antihistamine, but is in a class of drugs known as “non-benzodiazepine sedative-hypnotics”. I use it along with an NSAID. Results may vary, of course. For me, it helps takes the pain’s edge off just enough.

Oh, and this isn’t just wishful thinking:

Great idea. I was advised to take Claritin if I got bone pain from Neulasta (post-Jevtana). I'm going to give it a try! Maybe a diphenhydramine at bed time!

My husband had the exact same pain. The anti inflammatory meds worked better for him. Advil or Alleve for longer duration. Heating pads and Voltaren eased the pain until he got radiation. Hope you find something the works for you.

I have similar pain in my hip joints, especially after walking. I worried last month that it might be mets. It could be arthritis. The heat relieved the pain temporarily, whatever it is, after a minute at 110 degrees F. I suggest you try it. I do it with all my suspected mets. Early cancer research showed that cancer cells die at 106 degrees.

Celebrex?

I have also had bone pain. A combination of ibuprofen and dexamethasone helped me a lot. The dexamethasone had the side effect of worse than usual insomnia but it was worth it. I only needed it for a short time until the radiation took effect. Might be worth a try.

Cut back on your Tylenol. The max recommended daily dose is 3g. You'll kill your liver.

Noted. I'm told by a couple of docs that 4g for short time is okay.

I am very confused as I had I 6 centimetre tumour in my right hip/iliac. I am now experiencing a dull pain in my left hip. I know I am in a period where I'm only on Zytiga hormone injections and prednisolone. If I'm honest, nothing really hurts but I know I'm in a massive downward spiral!?

I can only write about my personal experience. In January 2023 I entered 10th year since I was diagnosed advance prostate cancer with metastatics in bones and limph nodes. Initial therapy started with ADT (still now), than 6 cycles of Docetaxel chemo, and last 3 years on Xtandi.

When bones pain occures, I use Zoledronate acid (Zometa, Zolendronat, Zitomera - dipending of the factory that produse drug). At the begining when pain was huge, I had infusion once a month in daily hospital. Pain vanishes very fast. I proceed with infusions like that next 2 years, even I had no more pain, than stop it and change my approach. I use it now every one or two year, one or two infusions when pain comes back, since it is enough to vanish pain. Wish you all the best❤️
