NIne Years of Lupron

Update: On Feb 28, 2023. I started my 10th year of Lupron. Back in February of 2014, after radiation failed, I had my first injection which I have continued with every 4 months After the first injection, PSA fell to 0.06. By September of 2016, it had climbed to 0.2. It is now 0.3. I am not on any other medications for prostate cancer.

None. I accidentally missed getting one injection but got it two months late.

I think cancer must be beyond prostate since 40 doses of external beam radiation did not cure me. But no indication of further spread.

From a fellow Canadian. You are doing well. I too have been battling this damn disease for a very long time. It will be ten years at the end of May. I have said this before on this forum (many times) and I am fixing to say it again. The following analogy is from my oncologist. You are on a train trip. Lupron is the locomotive. Over the years you might add cars to your train (i.e. Xtandi or Zytiga), you might add and detach a few cars during the trip (i.e. chemotherapy) but you never unhitch your locomotive (Lupron). You are on that for life. Take comfort in the fact that by going into your tenth year battling metastatic prostate cancer, you have done extraordinarily well. Good luck!

I realize how fortunate I am. And you are right about being on Lupron for life. That is what my RO told me the first time he prescribed it.

Good result Sandy & one thing I have finally learnt in 11 years of treatments is no more vacations for me, just stay with the treatment.

After many years of Lupron, I imagine one would have to take a fairly long vacation from ADT to see any change in energy levels.

Can I ask you, how do you deal with the effects of low testosterone on your bones?

I get bone density tests every two years and so far things are fine. I take 1000 mg calcium and a combination of Vitamin D (1000UI) and K (120mcg) daily. I walk every day and use light weights 4 times a week I have maintained my weight for many years.

Another Canadian here. This is such a good news story. You give hope to the rest of us. I got over 4 years with ADT alone. We added abiraterone in September once my PSA hit 1.0. I wish the best for you in the years ahead.

My hot flashes are not nearly as intense or as long-lasting as they used to be. Would estradiol help with my fatigue?

You seem to be on a similar train ride to my own, (starting in 2008) except my PSA was 8-10 before they started ADT (Lupron), and your PSA is .3 now while mine is <.1 for past 2years). Also, your injections are 4 months apart while mine are 3. By definition, your PSA indicates recurrent disease while mine does not, (more than .2). You are undergoing "continuous" ADT, while I was "intermittent". There is a slight suggestion of crmpc in you. Keep your eye on the PSA in the future and treat accordingly.

I am not on diet supplements. I have continued my usual diet (mixture of everything). I have maintained my weight throughout the 9 years of Lupron. I walk every day and do light weights 4 times a week.

Hubby's on an almost identical trajectory, DX and RP followed by failed radiation, Lupron for 9 years. Added Xtandi a year ago. Mets, PSA 18. Beginning Xofigo. No complaints, blessed by an easy ride so far.

It was also very great to manage the PCa only by Lupron for 9 years. Sorry to hear that you are preparing the 6 times Chemo-therapy as Lupron’s mission was expired. Xtandi also did his job. Hope Taxels will do their mission well. God bless you.

No. Eat mixture of everything but make sure I maintain same weight. I walk daily and use light weights 4 times a week. I'm 78, never smoked but drink wine and beer.

Just stopped my 15 years of Lupron/casodex on 01/04/2023......Getting ready to start on Nubequa (darolutamide).... (at least with Nubequa I'll be able to blow smoke rings)...
