cheese substitute

I’m limiting my diary intake. Really miss my grilled cheese sandwiches or Swiss cheese as an add on to my meals. Has anyone found something that’s healthy and tastes like cheese? Know anything about Noochy Licious?

Swiss cheese? If you’re going to do it, do it right. French all the way sir. Some things in life you just shouldn’t compromise.

Just eat the holes in the Swiss cheese, this way no matter what our other brothers say, you will be safe.

but those holes are really in tight. the only way i found to get them out is to eat the cheese around them. the holes are not really that great so i just save them up and give them to a charity.

I‘m 100% on whole food plant based diet and feel better than ten years ago. I loved cheese, too. There is vegan cheese available Europe. I‘m sure, you can buy this everywhere - just google.

Is soya safe?

According to my sources: yes.

seems there might be a relationship between prostate cancer progression and dairy products. I’ll play it safe.

Cooolone profile image

And little to no scientific data which will show that once you have cancer, stopping the consumption of diary has an effect.

The conundrum we all exist within...

not sure about prostate cancer, but after my breast cancers my oncologist warned against any SOY products, they are loaded with estrogen. Be careful

anony2020 profile image
anony2020 in reply to Justcallmeamy

I asked because some smart study suggested it promotes the growth of male hormone. It does sound a little strange because Asian monks consume a lot of soya products, tofu, soy milk, soy fake duck etc. They dont seem to breed a lot of little monks. 😄

And a lot of vegan/plant based meat is soya. They taste terrible.

I asked my oncologist about soy; he's a native of Malaysia. He said he didn't know if soy impacted PCa, although he's familiar with the general controversy. I've used quite a bit for eight months now with no bad results on blood tests and scans.

pakb profile image
pakb in reply to Justcallmeamy

Soy can actually be beneficial to breast cancer. It's not the same estrogen. Just stay away from highly processed soy. The soy issue has been scientifically debunked.

Cooolone profile image
Cooolone in reply to Justcallmeamy

And if SOY was such an issue, there's a paradox for the Asian diet which is loaded with soy... And yet has a low PCa statistic. But it has been found within that same population that consumes a western diet, a correspondence to higher PCa.

I have tried a few of the vegan cheeses. Most are not great, but the Gouda from Violife isn’t bad - and makes a decent grilled cheese!

Ressearch seems to show that dairy fat is linked to prostate cancer. Cheese eaters beware. I try to limit my cheese intake but am not very good at it. Moderation, my man.

London441 profile image

The question isn’t whether dairy fat is linked to prostate cancer, we already have that. The question is whether it linked to progression, recurrence, time to metastasis etc. No conclusive evidence at all.

I prefer to consider the factor far more important than eating cheese, overall health. I place my concerns about eating dairy fat far enough behind that to enjoy it in moderation.

Considering the taste of cheese substitutes, if you buy into its dangers you might be better off quitting cheese altogether.

Cooolone profile image

I love cheese, and cheese itself and it's corresponding lipids may be more the vehicle which is contributory to PCa progression. We don't know... But I've found it very hard to give up cheese... So I surrender to it, but try to limit it. Same goes for those Aged Ribeyes, lol

London441 profile image
London441 in reply to Cooolone

Ribeyes, booze, chocolate, dairy…enjoy. Less becomes more. Moral concerns notwithstanding, abstaining from all that you love-and can control your use of-to add a little time at the end is a fool’s errand 😀

Nutritional yeast can have a cheesy flavor for mixing with food. If you use, probably best to use a non-fortified version vs. the ones with extremely high Vit. B levels

Calhoun113 profile image
Calhoun113 in reply to dhccpa

Thanks. Not clear what’s wrong with fortified vitamin B

dhccpa profile image
dhccpa in reply to Calhoun113

The fortified versions add huge amounts of B vitamins, some of which may be negative for PCa.

I lived with a vegan for 4 plus years - we got thru the first part of the pandemic together. We are still very good friends. Occasionally - vegan chees would appear in the fridge, and I would taste it.

1 it is - in my opinion - absurdly expensive AND

2 I wonder how they make it taste like cheese - I think it is a lot of chemistry.

this is just a comment and not a declaration of war toward the non-chees people😉

make cheesy sauces out of cashews. Been doing this for 7 years. Recipes can be found in the Danielle Walker cookbooks/blogs. I can make an incredible Alfredo with cashews and water. :)

I don’t have the time to source it right now, but I read somewhere that cheddar and mozzarella are the best choice. I believe the dairy debate involves the pasteurization of dairy that strips its benefits and the growth factor inducing Characteristics. We do NOT want growth factors. When in doubt… go unprocessed or natural/organic.

I was a big cheeser for several years. It helped that there was great specialty cheese shop within walking distance. So it was very difficult to cut down on (way down, i was eating a lot of cheese) but i managed by substituting other wonderful foods not trying to make an imitation. Good luck finding them but if you can get great peaches (maybe you can in CO, it is very difficult in the US0 and maybe a few other simple foods like smoked salmon, who needs the cheese, well occasionally.

We love the Daiya vegan cheese...lot of fat so probably still not best for our body if we eat too much...but nice not to loose everything! I like the Daiya "Gorda" one best! Not shore which my bride uses for pizza, but they are great! For those who are on the fence about dairy, Dr Collin Campbell, Cornell Epidemiologist, in his book, the China Study has couple chapters on cancers detailing his findings on diet and cancer, as well as experimental evidence showing strong relationship between casien and cancer aggressiveness. Probably can find his book on Amazon, or cheaper checking it out at your local library.

Try this:

Recipe

I not only continue to consume dairy I switched from 2% to whole milk for my breakfast cereal. I don't eschew cheese on some of my sandwiches. I think sugar is a worse food than diary but even there I am not militant about avoiding it. Just no sugary fizzy water for me. I don't refuse ice cream either. Life is too hard to not indulge in that once in a while.

I think the problem is with too much animal fat. My husband uses Violife also. Of course it’s not as good as real cheese but he had plenty of real cheese and greasy beef for 60 years so here we are. He has found that he really likes avocados so enjoys those on toast. Because let’s be honest fake cheese is not good for you either.

Your cancer will find a way to survive and eat what it needs no matter what you eat.

So eat what you enjoy (in moderation) and focus on enjoying your life more. Restricting yourself from life's little pleasures is not likely to extend your time on earth much if at all, so there is no good reason to do that.

Most all the alternative foods are loaded with additives and non-healthy things anyway. They add the garbage to try to make the fake cheese, fake meat, fake ice cream, taste somewhat palatable.

Eat a heathy balanced diet of real food and your body will thank you.

Enjoy today and best wishes
