Does Casodex impact the results from PSMA PET Scan ?
My uncle who just got diagnosed gleason 9 was told by urologist to start casodex and then would do lupron shot in 1 month. The radiation oncologist the next week told him to stop taking Casodex and he had to wait 1 month for the casodex to "get out of his system" so it would not impact PET scan.
I am upset because he now has to wait 4 weeks to get PET scan and is NOT doing any treatment at all. He is gleason 9 and biopsy showed likely 2 lymph nodes and invasion of seminal vesicle.

Not sure if my link will be helpful. I read a lot of studies and reference documents but don't always understand all the science in them. I know that my doctor had me do the scan first and then I did the same Casodex for one month and then Lupron. Which I am currently on as well as halfway through radiation treatment
My basic understanding is that Casodex is used before a Lupron shot to minimize a rise ( flare) in testosterone caused by the Lupron. So the Urologist was following the standard treatment method to lower testosterone to starve the PCa. The idea is that this should also lower the amount of detectable PSA. However, a PSMA PET scan relies on PSA to highlight areas where PCa may be metastasizing. Seems to me that a PSMA PET scan should be done sooner rather than later before the PSA goes below 2.0, hope this helps, DD 😎.
If his cancer is hormone sensitive, castration therapy or anti androgen for a short time increase the PSMA expression which could be a good thing to localize metastases.
