Pain after TURP

I underwent a TURP about 2 weeks ago. This was after having total urine retention, and subsequently living with a Foley catheter for 7 months.

I had a Suprabupic catheter put in when under with the TURP, and lucky they did, as so far I still haven't any sort of normal urinary function.

The question is, has anybody had a Foley catheter long term before a TURP, and how was your recovery?

I am experiencing significant pain in my penis and prostate area, (since just after I left hospital) and the DRs are telling me everything, (bladder, urethra, prostate,rectum ), was traumatised by the Foley catheter being in for so long, and then the surgery on top of that, as well as chronic UTI's. I have to wait 6 weeks to see my Urologist.

Any thoughts?

Oooooph. Turps are tough enough (I have had 2 TURPS), but your case is more intense. Go for pain management. In 2022, no one should be in pain on top of battling this indidious disease we all have. Keeping your spirits up is key to longevity. Find what works, and use it. No reason to tough it out! Mike

I agree. Pain management should be requested and if the source can be determined perhaps it can be addressed.

(I am on week 3 with a Foley thanks to a muscle invasive prostate cancer tumor. After 13 months the clots stopped passing. Surgical removal of the bladder is the ultimate answer but this would take me off cancer treatments for many months. I wouldn’t make it. So waiting on an appointment next week to learn about cauterization of the tumor inside the bladder.)

tallguy. Cauterization of the tumor in bladder is usually done by TURP. One or 2 days in the hospital, with a relatively quick recovery. Do not lift more than 10lbs for 4 weeks. Remember millions have been done. KEY: find a surgeon with 500+ procedures. They will not be surprised at anything. Hope u find a good solution. Mike

thank you. And here I thought TURP was just to resect a prostate and that it would be an outpatient procedure. I have an outstanding surgeon on my team.

Get a prescription for Pyridium. It will help the pain. It will also turn your urine red-orange.

Pyridium can be purchased OTC if docs won’t give you an Rx. Look for brand name AZO UTI Passion Relief or any generic Phenazopyridine Hydrochioride product.

I had two turps and was in a Foley catheter for 9 weeks before the first one, and 3 weeks before the second.

I had minor pain, blood, and a ton of clots for 4 weeks after the first one. Then blood and clots started up again about 8 weeks later. That led to the cystoscopy that revealed prostate cancer growing into the bladder neck and bladder, and the second TURP to roto router out and biopsy that spread. No idea I had cancer before that.

Pyridium *will* stain clothing. It will make your pee *very* orange and oily feeling. Not sure how much pain relief it gave me. I stopped it before using the entire Rx both times.

Oxybutynin is another Rx that might help with pain. I believe it’s for bladder spasms. I took that after both TURPs and my RO gave me an Rx for it when I mentioned some pain urinating.

I can't imagine a Foley for 7 months. You are one tough guy, I would have ripped it out which I did once

If you look at a resectoscope online you will see what a fine delicate tool they use for a TURP. They used that on me, I'm not a drain pipe, thank you., well maybe? You will be amazed that anything works at all. I am in the "final" stages of healing from my TURP (after prior radiation which is not a good idea) three years later. Still intense pain on urination some times and still passing clots occasionally.

No one seems to know anything to do about it. I might try my magic castor oil cure again. I am urinating now so maybe it would not help. You can find the info about the cure (this is for scar tissue not cancer) in the archives.

With all the fancy imaging I do not understand why there is not something that can tell what is really going on in my (or your) peeing system that is causing all the problem.

I supra pubic has been recommended but I am trying to avoid that as long as possible. How is it living with one?

I had a supra-pubic catheter following HIFU surgery, which is routine. It was weird but tolerable. It involves drilling through the abdominal wall and directly into bladder. Odd that they could just remove it when the time came and the bladder just sealed itself up. It did cause some cramping/discomfort, like the bladder senses a foreign object it was trying to expel.

I too had Radiation Treatment ( 16 years ago) Maybe that's a huge part of my problem. Do you think that the treatment has complicated your recovery from the TURP.?

It's only been 3 weeks, but so far the SPC isn't too bad to live with. Definitely more comfortable and less painful than the Foley.

i think the radiation definitely interfered with healing from the TURP. my old urologist said he would do anything to avoid a TURP on irradiated tissue

I had a foley in for 3 months prior to TURP due to no void, kidneys shutting down. I was told 6 to 8 weeks recovery time. Lots of pain for the first week and bleeding for 3 weeks. extra strength Tylenol was my friend, it got me through it. It worked great for me, the TURP. Peed like a 20-year-old in a couple weeks.
