I have Prostate cancer with Gleason 8 and about to do the TURP procedure. My big problem is the medium lobe. Anyone have an opinion or experience with the recovery from TURP and having prostate cancer.

TURP is a simple surgical procedure which opens the urethral pipeline to ease urine flow from bladder to urinal.
An instrument is inserted into penile urethra, advanced to prostatic part of urethra where the tumor from median lobe of prostate is pressing. The instrument is moved in a way to dilate the prostatic part of urethra and at time a small obstructing piece of tumor chipped away. Once urethra is dilated , urine flows beautifully from bladder to your toilet. Best wishes

Some guys breeze through it; some guys have issues. For the guys who have issues, it is often because of build-up of scar tissue blocking flow. For them, a do-over can sometimes relieve the obstruction. Surgical and HoLEP (laser) are the two most popular ways of accomplishing the TURP, and they each have practitioner-advocates. The potential side effects are similar to prostatectomy, and a catheter is needed until for atleast a few days.
I have quite severe retention and slow flow 13 months after HIFU partial ablation. I'm in for a biopsy and cystoscopy next week. My surgeon councils against TURP if I can live with my issues. He says there is a risk of incontinence. He also says that he prefers conventional scraping to laser for HIFU remediation. I hope the cystoscopy makes the decision clear. Also bladder spasms are a significant issue. Hose clamps anyone? Happy New Year.
Good luck. The camera scan will help. Read up on and look in to Rezum, even if your doctor does not do it.
Thank you. I had the camera scan twice in the past year, mostly because I was trying for the Rezum procedure, but they will not do it because of the medium lobe and the cancer. Too bad for me. I would prefer that procedure.
I had my TURP 5yrs. after initial diagnosis PSA 79 in 2009. , ( Gleason 7 from TURP chips) , opted not to have any orthodox treatment so kept it at bay for 5 years. The sudden passing of my wife led to a bladder shutdown and ER treatment, catheter and a Nuclear Scan showed a total white left kidney and ureter, and a hotspot on the right hip girdle. Urologist said "you can survive for 7 years on one kidney" With a PSA of 134 he put me on Zoladex to shrink the prostate enough to do the TURP. so I could get off the Foley catheter At 81 I was his second oldest patient but it turned out my recovery, being cleared to go home the next day, was one of his best.
My PSA went down to point 9 after 3 Zoladex injections over 9 months, after that I went on various alternative treatments and had one injection a year, by which time the PSA had risen to 20 or so. My reckoning is that by reducing the number of injections it will be longer before they stop working.
I did have another Nuclear Scan 12 months after the first that showed no hot-spots, all clear.
My health is excellent which I put down to the diet I am on, I feel fitter than I was 10 years ago apart from less muscle strength despite HIIT and weight lifting, testosterone does make a big difference and I sympathize with the women competing with men in training for various services!
If you would like to know about the diets I am on let me know. Mental attitude is important, worry can Cause cancer, so don't!

I went through TURP 16 months ago in preparation for proton beam radiation for Gleason 3+4. My flow was determined to be of a 95 year old man (I was 65). Researched quite a bit to learn that TURP must be done prior to radiation.
Had procedure then went home with catheter for a week. That was hardest part. But then (remember Tall Allen say some guys have issues. Well 2 months later I couldn’t pee much and they did another cystoscope to find strictures reforming. I’ve now had 5 procedures since August, 2018 plus 28 sessions of proton beam radiation. I am still worried about the inflammation in my system and how to get rid of Italy still have issues that feel like I’m having a UTI (pain, frequency) but tested negative against over 100 bacterial infections. Now considering Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to improve healing process internally..
While I understand you need to treat the cancer you also need to treat the BPH issues too. If you’ve got enough spare time in your time,I’ve (and at G8 probably less than I had at G7) then I’d suggest looking at Rezum knowing that if it wasn’t working after 6 weeks you’d still be able to do TURP.
My buddy was on similar timeline and chose HELOP. His outcomes were very near to mine, probably worse due to it being a more extensive surgery.
We have since learned that few men have TURP (or HELOP) AND radiation as most doctors convince them to have one procedure, the prostatectomy and be done. Then the men often forget the high incidence of radiation and other salvage post surgery along, of course, with possible ED and incontinence. Personally it would take a lot to get me to do the surgery.
It’s been a long ride and I have been hit with getting things that have low odds but that’s where I’m at. The good news is the cancer seems to be under control, PSA under 1 last time we checked.

Thank you. Sadly I went to four different urologist in my area and an email discussion with one at the Mayo in AZ who specializes in Rezum. The last cystoscope showed that the enlarged medium lobe it is not cancer related, but they will not do Rezum on that region because all the ones I talked to have not done so. Even though you will find lots of information online that says Rezum is the best procedure for an enlarged medium lobe. So I think I am stuck...
I have had 2 TURP operations and have no I'll effects.....being able to urinate properly was a great relief
