Hey gang, spending the day beachside in Ventura after Chemo #12

Did a two miler today (5k a last night) broke Fast with veggie chow mein, siu mai, pork Xiao long baos, steamed Manila clams and Drive Thru Dry Hopped red ale from Trader Joe's.

Haven't had Chinese dumplings in awhile 😋

Kaiser Medicare approved. PSMA scan for me. MO okayed 6 more Cabazitazel chemos, ending the week before Turkey Day 🦃🍗🤣

The song is from Hawaiian duo Cecilio and Kapono circa the 70s.

Another local band is Kalapana

Ventura highway in the sunshine

Where the days are longer

The nights are stronger

Than moonshine

You're gonna go I know

'Cause the free wind is blowing through

Your hair

And the days surround your daylight

There

Seasons crying no despair

You're living the good life, fight on Randy!

What's your fasting regimen for each chemo? And do you use ice boots/gloves, etc? Thanks

in reply to dhccpa

Good question, thank you dockam for hope, on this beautiful morning. Have a blast!

Actually drove back up last night, and it was a beautiful day yesterday to just watch the waves, get tanned, break Fast and have beers. I have always been a glass half full kinda guy and that has really helped during my 7 1/2 yr saga with #stageivpca.

Ups and downs with scanxiety - awaiting test or scan results, plus depression from all these yrs on Lupron can take a huge toll on one's psyche .

Exercise is a great anti depressant, and I'm also trying to stave off osteoporosis, the latest DEXA shows osteopenia, with weight bearing exercises.

Cardio/weight workouts will also offset the muscle loss, fat gain, and heart issues

Hi, for chemo on Friday pm, I have my last meal on Weds at 1pm when I normally break my 18 hr fast. I sip on veggie, tomato, curry, ginger, and garlic broth whilst fasting. I will have a Spring mix salad with a can of tuna in water as a meal, about 100 calories. No ice gloves/hat/boots. My previous MO and I came to the conclusion that my aerobic fitness from marathons have really opened up the fine capillaries in fingers/toes, and that may be why I never had neuropathy.

Fasting puts the normal cells into a hibernation state and the ever voracious cancer gets fed chemo :-)

I will break fast after chemo on my way back home

Only side significant side effects were hair loss with Taxotere, but not with Cabazitaxel. Just a mild Dysgeusia - bad, metallic taste.

During chemo, I will do leg work outs and do 50 squats during it, or even just walking back and forth in the chemo bay. My theory is that I want the chemo to circulate as many times as possible to increase the kill rate and that also opens up the tiny capillaries and oxygenates the tissue, thus preventing neuropathy.

I try and do a hike that pm after chemo in order to get heart rate up. When I had chemos in East Anaheim, CA, I would climb the 7 story parking structure

Your amazing really. And if one can follow even 50% of your example it will do them well.Prior to my measly (compared to you) 6 infusions 2 1/2 years ago I got some good advice from a family member who said don't be a patient. Get out of your pajamas everyday and get on with it.

You take that advise ten fold!

dockam profile image
dockam in reply to CAMPSOUPS

Lol, and Mahalo for the compliment. Yes, "get er done" I attribute to my being a crazy driven, goal-oriented, Type AAA Asian :-)

Have said to a few dental patients "Go big or go dead" or " I had to get an A++++ in chemo" :-)

A previous Kaiser MO, whilst at the initial appointment mentioning adjunctive therapy e.g. 18 hr Intermittent Fasting, stated disparagingly something to the effect that "I know that you feel the need to have some control with your #stageivpca treatment" I thought "what the F" - Of course!!! Duh!!!

I have a new MO now, who has been better at my giving me input. I am very well researched, a lot of that cuz of this HU site.

I have posted this blog post from Athlinks ( a race collating website) previously and dunno if you've read it a:

Thanks it means a lot coming from you.You really carry the ball for us all!

I did see that link before by the way. This time my foggy brain will save it in my files lol.

It really focuses in on who you and us are.

Instead of a food fight, you and the MO had a fasting fight! Great story. Doncha love discouragement from a doc?

Go, Randy, go. You are such an inspiration. We've gotta get outta this place. I do need to take your advice. I'm gonna do it.

dockam in reply to monte1111

Yea Brother, no one gets out alive and what can one do to enhance one's longevity? I use my #stageivpca diagnosis and most recently COVID to advise my pts that one should do as much as one can with diet( mostly plant based, lean protein, complex carbs), exercise (weights/cardio), stress relief, as early as possible. It ain't gonna be easier if you wait to start way later.

Started the practice in 1999, and the majority of my long term patients are getting bigger and on more meds.

Had a patient up here, tear up as her MD told her she was pre-diabetic a few years ago, I told her that she could avoid meds by dropping the simple carbs, and burning blood glucose with cardio to lessen the burden on your lil pancreas. My office manager saw her at the grocery store later, and saw that she had a cart full of junk food. That patient is now on metformin and insulin shots

Great song that you mentioned above:

Which chemo did you get 12 of?? I've received seven of Jevtana plus carboplatin and somehow now have low-iron anemia. Walking the dog is more my level now. I miss running and riding bike.

dockam profile image
dockam in reply to StePeteMN

Hi, the 3rd round of chemos is with Jevtana (Cabazitaxel) with 6 more. I wanna add carboplatin to the last 6 sessions, will msg my MO about adding it. Had 15 Taxotere session in 2015 and 6 more in 2020.My RBC count has fluctuated between 4.21 to 4.84

HGB at 12.5 to 14.2

So, been borderline anemic with sometimes low hemoglobin.

I live at 4000 ft and the lower O2 helps my body try and compensate and produce more RBCs , a kinda natural blood doping.

When I did the 5k in Ventura at sea level, it was about 4 minutes faster than up here.

The more you stress your cardiovascular system, the easier the workouts will become

My best to you

Randy

Btw, gotta go do the elliptical and stepper before patients later :-) "Get er done"

Randy, drive down to C Street (California St just North of the pier) to watch some of the best Surf on the West Coast. Really 3 points all at one location. The parking lot stretches up 1/4 mile. Santa Barbara is 30 min North, where we lived for 35 years. One of the nicest towns in the US. Enjoy your journey, Mike
