spouse just got a lupron shot- he is in his 2nd yr- end of 2nd yr- and he takes Xtandi- he had provenge in JAN. and he has very bad brain side effects. He had a brain MRI bc his cancer went to bones and lymph glands- but he has bad brain side effects that could be from the Xtandi side effects- the condition that it can cause in the brain- we are waiting for 4-13 appt to hear results of MRI> normally after taking Xtandi each day around 5 pm he gets nasty and has bad side effects of hot flashes but the worst part is that he gets very nasty to me. ANd he says jittery and doe snot want to be bothered even with his cat that wants to lie on him. I cannot even talk to him bc he gets so nasty and says he doesn't want to be bothered. He has vision issues- headaches and was saying he thought he had brain tumor- bc that is what his mother died from. But I think it is the xtandi- so my question is- Does anyone out there have the same bad Xtandi side effects- irritable- and get nasty- jittery- does not want anyone around talking etc.? I assume it is the hormones and maybe the new LUPRON shot is adding some issues as well. Than you for any help in advance- he is very emotional. I have heard menopausal females can get that way but I never had that issue. but this is very bad - emotional ups and downs.

Gloria, Mood swings, irritability and anger outbursts can be caused by low T...which results from use of Lupron. Just like in menopausal women, it varies from mild to severe in men.Extandi works by blocking effect of testosterone and do not lower testosterone....Just blocks its effect. Lupron lowers testasteron to very low level which results in hotflashes, mood lability, extreme tiredness and tendency to just lie in bed . Also, he needs to screened for depression because depression is common in men who are diagnosed with PCa. Anti depressant medicines not only improve mood, energy and sleep but also have some anti cancer effect. Discuss with his doctor.

I don’t think it was the Xtandi that gave me most of that stuff, but the hormone treatment. My doctor gave me a script for Effexor for my depression and anxiety. It helped a lot. Good luck warrior 🙏🙏

We are all different........... My personality had not change since I started Lupron injections. I'm still the old miserable son of a bitch that I've always been.....

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

Yea ….. I’ve been on Lupron Xtandi for 3 1/2 years and I get “ all that “ and a great deal more. Meds like opiate pain meds , their side effects and withdrawal issues, just pile on top of everything. Never mind adding on the fact we are just sitting and watching ourselves crumble apart and croak. Frankly seems like , from what you describe, he’s not doing too bad … so far. It might ( likely ) get much worse as time passes.

Some of it is up to us guys to take into consideration as well. Do recreational things that take our minds off it, VR goggles , hobby interests, go for walks, travel locally, …. Play UNO with your better half / caregiver ….. watch engrossing movies. Yep, it’s ugly, awful and the longer you go the more it stresses out everyone, especially your loving partner. BOY HOWDY …this stuff does wear on everyone … OMG. Sometimes us guys have to stop and think about the damage we’re doing to our loved ones as well. It’s a serious consideration. It’s sickening to sit and watch our life partner disintegrate right in front of us. They come apart just like us guys do and they are so attached to us. We need to help each other.

The advice here like Effexor, especially seeing the mental health people on your husbands palliative care team. For me, I use a benzo, Xanax, which does very well when I need it … and ( if it’s available in your area ) some high grade decarbed sativa cannabis … about quarter to half a gram of flour in peanut butter and eat it … daily … will act a great deal like Xanax but be more fun and upbeat.

Hopefully a few things I mentioned will help … make him get up off his butt and jump earnestly right into this stuff that many here , including myself , will / have mentioned … you’ll see instant results. A better QOL mental state is fairly easy to be had … if you get on with it.

If you want more info on VR goggles or sativa decarb flour , or anything I’ve mentioned, let me know.

Best wishes ❤️❤️❤️

I had been on Lupron for several months with the typical side effects. I was dealing with it. Then they put me on Xtandi and after two weeks I fell of the cliff. I got extremely nervous and jumpy. Then I could not get any sleep for 3 days (maybe 1 to 2 hours per night) at which time I felt horrible and thoughts of ending it came up. I immediately stopped the Xtandi and it cleared up. That is when they put me on Zytiga and Prednisone. Doing better with it, but still have some side effects. Certain drugs work with some people and not others. Part of the trial. Good luck.

From one partner to another, I really feel for you. At times it seems too hard. Then I think of how much harder it is for my man and it helps to reignite the empathy. The response from bitchonwheels is helpful. My husband found xtandi completely unbearable from a fatigue and brain fog perspective, it's a very individual response. A switch to Zytiga after a couple of months helped somewhat. Still massively tired but cognitively not as bad. Talk to your doctor about antidepressants if he is not already taking. Again, we found a minor improvement. Some talking therapy for him might help too. Take care of your own well being too. Make sure to talk with friends/family. Best wishes.

My husband has started on Lupron and will be receiving radiation soon for stage 3b Prostate Cancer. I am already seeing the moodiness and he is already getting hot flashes but no night sweats. i try to remember that he is struggling more than I am, and men are generally not so ready to lean on their wives, sometimes. Try to remember, IT IS NOT YOU. He is just reacting to his own plight and struggle. Hope this helps. God bless you both.
