Hello. My father PSA level has risen, he has been on monthly Lupron injections. They want him to start XTandi or Zytiga. Was curious if anyone has had a family member take this drug at this age and what the side effects were. Thanks so much for any help.
Xtandi and 90 Year father - Side effe... - Advanced Prostate...
Xtandi and 90 Year father - Side effects?
stay on Lupron monotherapy until castrate resistant as both Xtandi and Zytiga have a long list of side effects....if he was younger there might be a survival advantage adding Zytiga earlier
I agree with Gus...Lupron is bad enough...at 90, if he is still castrate sensitive, leave him on Lupron...Bring him his favorite meal instead...he'll appreciate that a lot more...
Yes, they are standard of care for metastatic castration-resistant men like your father. The best way to know if the side effects are too severe for him is to try it. If it is too much, he can stop taking the pills (slowly stopping the prednisone if he takes Zytiga).
More good input...thanks Nalakrats... personally, If I was 90 and had this, I'd drink some good bourbon, take a pain pill, smoke a premium cigar, and sit on the dock and go fish in the sunshine... beats ADT any day...
my guess: smoke something else premium ??....LOL..
I like your nutritional outlook...
at 90 why would u do it? he's lived a good and long life. he will die of something then the cancer at his age. heart attack, copd, and others. let him enjoy the time he has left
charlie
me Polly....me want a special cracker...butter it up good...LOL...
My dad was on xtandi ..no side effects. Stopped working . Now prescribing Zytiga...he may not be taking it. He is 93 and in extremely good health otherwise. The only issue he is Cancer is now in bones and having some pain.
90 is new 80. Go for 100
Amazing at 93..
My husband (after chemo, provenge, lupron etc) has been on xtandi for 18 months. There has been a significant muscle loss, a bit of cognitive (or is it the lupron, chemo) impact and some weird balance issues. But the disease has not grown in his bones. Does your dad have someone who could help him at home? It could knock him back. He could try it and stop. But if he’s living independently now, it might tip that independence earlier than the growth of the cancer. It’s a brutally hard choice I know.
At 90 (God bless him) just keep him away from "loose" women...
Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

I would agree with N’krats. Try Casodex before Xtandi or Zytiga. Side effects are less and I got nearly 3 years out of Casodex before showing resistance. PSA still low, but switched me to Xtandi.
The only noticeable side effects from Xtandi I get is sleepiness about an hour and a half after taking. So I take it in the evening. I'm 20 years younger than your dad. Others have bad experience. I would give it a try and discontinue if I had to. (Has worked for 17 months for me, and some up to 3 years.) I do have mild memory issues, but I blame the lupron, and they are only mildly annoying. I think part of these treatments may be mind set. Not really big on positive thinking etc. but if you go into something expecting bad side effects, I'm sure that is what you will get. Follow your doctors advice for sure. I vote give it a chance.
Father at 87 is on Zytiga, only been on it 3 months but so far no side effects on him, seems to feel better but he’s not very Mobile so hard to say.
Go Dad go..
