I came over this video which I thought was worthy of sharing with the group. Goes into the biology of fasting and how it can help. Theres a bit on cancer half way through: youtu.be/RuOvn4UqznU

Thank you for sharing that. If you are interested in fasting just Google Valter Longo. He is an Italian Dr. who has an amazing amount of research on it

I used to fast bi-weekly and strictly followed a keto diet for over 20 years. ADT has caused me to have drug induced (d2) diabetes and I take several heavy bg meds and exercise nearly daily to keep my bg under control. If I fasted now, those heavy bg meds might send me into diabetic shock and be dangerous for me. If you are diabetic and ( esp ) taking insulin ( D1) or heavy bg meds ( d2) , you would have to be careful fasting …checking your bg closely. Just my 2cents worth. It’s always prudent to check with your medical care team , first, in any event.

That video is why I advocate getting info from clinical trials instead of youtube videos. What works in mice and in test tubes usually does not work in humans, unfortunately. IGF-1 inhibitors have failed to be beneficial in PCa in all clinical trials. There may be some usefulness in preventing side effects of chemo, which is being investigated in clinical trials. OTOH, there may be dangers, particularly in diabetic people. In mice, caloric restriction slowed cancer growth at the time, but any resumption in feeding resulted in accelerated growth, so it may lead to making the cancer worse instead of better. This is why clinical trials are needed and patients should not follow youtube medicine.

Yes, I think we have discussed this before. I think the subject of fasting is very complex and I like how the video explains the different phases of fasting. Fasting over longer periods is a serious business and should not be done without reference to your MO. I have used fasting (36hr fasting) before chemo since the arguments seem very logical. Like a lot of this stuff its very difficult to do clinical phase 111 trials on this. But I do regular 24hr fasts when I feel like it - let the body decide. Makes me feel good.

By the way do you know why they use mice etc in their research studies when the dont work as substitutes for humans??

They use mice as screeners- to screen things OUT, rather than to screen things IN. Because everything works in mice, if it does NOT work, it almost definitely will not work in humans.

There are actually several clinical trial for fasting for prostate cancer (many more for other cancers):

Those poor mice! I'll bet they're all cute as a bug, too.

Many are nude (hairless), which I think are pretty creepy looking.

So does this mean that intermittent fasting is a good thing in our cancer struggles? Is there studies that deal with intermittent fasting while on ADT in particular?

There are no data from humans yet. Most of the randomized clinical trials, which mature soon, are about fasting and chemo.

This is something that I found:sperlingprostatecenter.com/...

I've fasted two days prior to all the 24 chemos that I've had so far and this has reduced the side effects.

Also have been on IF(Intermittent Fasting) since the #stageivpca diagnosis 7 years ago. I do the 16/8 IF with the last meal at 9pm and break fast at 1pm the next day.

Btw, also on Metformin /Lipitor.

"Individual results may vary" 😊

Fight on ✌️

Thanks Randy - there are so many indications that fasting/keto will help to protect healthy cells and not PC cells that its worth a try. We wont have any proof before these clininal trials mature - but I suspect many of us are willing to be ahead of the trial results - just as long as there is solid science in the background. But - like everything else - we are all different!!

I know that I'm doing IF without sufficient data, but also wanted to try an adjunctive therapy that may extend my life. Old data said a 28% chance of a 5 year survival, but here I am, this month is my 7 year Cancerversary 💙
