Fasting in the month of Ramadan

Hi All,

A brief of myself:

Diagnosed on 9 October 2017, advanced metas. Pca with gleason score 4+3 (7) and PSA was at 192. No bone mets determined but some lymph nodes detected. Did Chemo in January 2018 for 6 cycles (Taxatore) and last infusion was on April 17, 2018. Been on Lucrin (leuproelin acetate) every 3 months since. My current PSA since April 5th is at 2.02 lowest its ever gone was 1.5

Okay, so today I am on my 25th day of fasting from sunrise till sunset everyday since its the holy month of Ramadan. I know many swear by intermittent fasting. My wife has been wondering if I should be doing it so rigourously and even showed me articles that fasting continuously may even dampened and hurt my immune system. She is very concerned. I feel fine, thirsty most of the day but overall not too bad. A little headaches now and then during the day. Oh, yes fatigue does set in but its manageable. I am currently working as a school teacher[Singapore], (for the last 36 years and counting...). Just submitted my early option to retire, so hopefully will be retired by end of this year :)

I have another 5 days more to go to the end of the fasting month. Is it alright if I continue or should I listen to my wife and take breaks? On the other hand, its the religious aspect of the fasting process. I did not fast last year since I just came out of my chemotherapy. Ahem...trying to make a pact with my supreme leader to get some life extension if I go the distance....just hoping... Yes, I did check with my oncologist and urologist and both said its fine as long as I stay on my meds and pace myself.

So dear brothers and all the lovely and beautiful caregivers to our brothers, should I stop or just head for the end line...5 days and counting.

My very best to all and my best regards,

Haniff

I doubt whether fasting during the day will hurt you. It's not really fasting, like in the articles your wife has, because you do eat every night.

Hi Tall_Allen,

Oh thank you for your wise words my dear brother. I agree, like you wrote, I do get to eat after sunset and believe me, I do eat...hahaha My wify is just very concerned. The poor soul has been trying everything, diet wise and meds wise, for me ever since I was diagnosed.

Thanks Allen, god bless.

We have to take care of our souls as well as our bodies.

Interesting. I saw a post on facebook claiming that ramadan fasting kills prostate cancer. During ramadan devout muslims simply rearrange their eating time table. No food and drink from sunrise to sunset. Then eating at sun down, then a dinner, and waking up before sunrise to eat. What can make a difference is not a single drop of water between sunrise and sunset. In a hot climate and long days, it can lead to some dehydration.

Thanks dac500

Yes thirst always gets the better of me through the day but I hang in there.

Take good care and my very best

Hey, I still do the IF from 9pm to 1pm - 16/8. Except home this period in Hawaii. I'm in that routine and it gives me a sense of some control, tho maybe it may not even matter 🤔

Glad to know you do the IF. Yup getting control is important. I always tend to go off the tangent when it comes to great food plus it does not help that my wife is a great cook...hahaha

Take good care brother and enjoy the beauty of Hawaii and the warmth of home and family.

Should be fine....just stay hydrated....drink lots of fluid in the am before sunrise...no need to mess with kidney function....I do like dockam...usually about 16 hrs IF...no problems but I drink lots of water...keep fighting...good luck...

Thanks Fish

Yeah hydration is crucial especially in a weather like ours that hits a high of 32-33 C most days. You too keep fighting the good fight!

Take care brother and my very best

Stay with the fast. Search autophagy. It is great for the body. Excellent for the immune system.
