ADT hot flash treatment: Paxil vs. Pycnogenol?

Am taking Relugolix to lower PSA and am experiencing hourly nighttime hot flashes that deny me a restful night's sleep. My MO recommends Paxil or Pycnogenol to alleviate the hot flashes.

Is there anyone here who has tried BOTH Paxil and Pycnogenol and can compare the relative effectiveness and side effects of each?

I would take estradiol patches:

This is interesting. I wanted to do the patches for my ADT but can't find a doctor here that is willing so I'm going to give Relugolix a try. But this sounds like a potential way to address hot flashes while on it. No way would I take Paxil. I know people who've been on it for other reasons and it is very difficult to stop with side effects like brain zaps, in their experience. What dose are you using?

Usually two 100 μg patches are used during one week to mitigate side effects.

I doubt you will get a prescription from your urologist. Maybe ask your wife or a friend to get a prescription from a GP for her hot flushes during menopause.

There’s a drug to counter any side effect but they come with a cost, especially when combined. Be as fit and strong as you can, it makes a big difference.

If you do take drugs, add more exercise to whatever you choose. Extra weight is also a major contributor to hot flashes. If you’re overweight lose some.

Never took either, nor depro provera, acupuncture, fans, gizmos or fancy diet. Occasionally warm, never a hot flash. I credit my cardiovascular fitness and strength. I’m aware I am not answering your question, this is just in case you don’t realize how big a factor it is.

My cardiologist tests me 1-2 times a year for cardiovascular fitness, and tells me my fitness is superior. That said, I have been taking Orgovyx for ~ 6 weeks now, and hot flashes have been both frequent and significant.

I think factors other than fitness and strength are at play, in terms of the hot flashes. I'm just going to power through the hot flashes rather than take yet more pills, potions, and powders! To each his own path, however. I am not going to second-guess anyone!! 😀

Of course more than strength and fitness are at play for some. You may be one of them.

It’s nice that your cardiologist so impressed. ‘Superior’ fitness is high praise. What do you do? What does his test consist of?

His test includes circulatory scans and a tread mill test which he himself monitors. I do a combination of aerobics, pilates, and weights. You?

Sounds good. I lift, row, cycle, walk, sports, HIIT, plyometrics and stretching/mobility work for the sports blah blah😀

Mostly if life gets busy and I can’t do everything , zone 2 training, stretching and weights take priority.

Onward!

Many excellent studies have shown the blah blah to be the most important and effective of all exercises…but of course you already know this.

I’ve been using estradiol patches for over 7 years now and they work like a charm, good for bone health too. I used to get numerous, really bad hot flashes.

EdBar: Are you taking the patches "instead" of ADT or "in addition to" ADT to counter hot flashes?

In addition to.
