I am currently taking car of my 82 yo father with metastasized Prostate cancer. Hormone Therapy and recently stopped working and his PSA is starting to climb. He just started Docetaxel, 4 sessions, every 3 weeks. I can see his decline in the last 6 months and am wondering if this means we are heading towards the end of the road. How long can someone live after hormone therapy stops working and can he do multiple sessions of Docetaxel with breaks in between or is this it after these 4?
What happens after Chemo (Docetaxel) - Advanced Prostate...
What happens after Chemo (Docetaxel)
Can he get one of the second-line anti-androgens like Enzalutamide (Xtandi) or Abiraterone (Zytiga)?
He started with Abiraterone (I believe) when that stopped working we moved on to Xtandi. that worked for about 6 months. I was told that hormone therapy isn't working anymore and that Chemo is the next phase. His Dr. is only giving him 80% of Docetaxel because of his age and fragility.
It's a good question and interested to see what others write.
I'm 2 years in on this journey and in similar position at 57, Radium 223 failed after 4 rounds, the Samarium 153 the tests showed that it wasn't going to work so didn't even start, Zytiga stopped working after a few months and the only thing that's helped is another round of Chemo. My Oncologist has said I'm limited now because it seems anything else they try likely isn't going to work, so do they just keep trying Chemo until it stops working or my body just can't take the poisoning abuse anymore? At least I have age on my side and probably can take a 3rd round of Chemo, I was quite poorly Xmas and wasn't keen on the prospect of Chemo again, this time I've lost 3 teeth, a small price to pay I suppose but it gives an indication of how toxic this stuff can be on the body.
Last round of Chemo lasted 11 months before PSA started climbing, so keeping my fingers crossed that I maybe have another year before things start going downhill again, who knows for sure?
Hi, how different everyone's journey. My husband has been on anti androgen drugs since the very beginning of his diagnosis. He became resistant to Goserelin implant so they now give him leuprorelin 3monthly. His chemo went badly the Doxetaxel nearly finished him off as he became febrile and ill after every dose. He ended up with cystic pneumonia so was taken off the doxetaxel and now has been on enzalutamide for the last year or so. He endures the constant hot flushes and sometimes loss of appetite and fatigue but is still with us. His psa has not climbed since starting the enzalutamide. I hope this informs.
Greetings, I think it would be a good idea to re-post your question on a future date. Because I would expect more responses then you received. Also a good idea is to give us more of your dear Dad's bio. Location. doctor's etc.
Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.
