Hello all. My brother in law is trying to join our little group and I want to do everything possible to make sure he never qualifies. He recently had an exam which revealed a nodule through his DRE. His PSA is currently 7. He plans to seek a specialist at Duke. Any recommendations? I live in Oregon so have no knowledge of south east specialists. Thanks.

Dr Andrew Armstrong. He’s great!

He doesn't need a specialist yet - he doesn't even have a diagnosis. He needs a biopsy, wherever he is.

Agreed. That’s what I told him. They live in Danville VA

Has he had a 3T MRI of prostate yet?

Nothing yet, just the DRE and PSA test

3T MRI and percent free PSA would both be helpful and both are non-invasive.

Thanks Nalakrats. That’s what I am encouraging him to do

I don't know any of the docs at Duke, though I do know that the Duke Cancer Center is highly regarded by the National Cancer Institute.

The Duke website lists seven urologic oncologists, which is a pretty large number, at:

dukecancerinstitute.org/pro...

You can click on individual names to get more info, including patient reviews, for each doctor.

Unless he has access to a known good urologist wherever your brother-in-law lives,I think there may be advantages to his getting the biopsy done at Duke. There should be good surgeons and good pathologists there as well as modern equipment.

Best of luck.

Dr. Judd Moul is my urologist. He done my and another friends of mine prostatectomy. Can’t say anything but excellent. The prostate cancer program is world class.

I have seen several doctors a Duke, especially Dr. Judd Moul and now my oncologist, Dr. Daniel George. I have been under care of Duke since 2009. I can say nothing but great things about these doctors and about Duke Cancer Center. I do not feel you can go wrong at Duke.

Tell your B-I-L we don't need or want him here. If he goes for a biopsy tell him to demand that the doctor gives him anesthesia (knocks him out cold) for the procedure, because it literally will be quite a pain in the ass.......Tell him to make sure the doctor (generally urologist) has peformed many many biopsys. Also remind him you don't want another tie for a Christmas present...........

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

I have to chime in. My biopsy was without anaesthesia. Yeah, it was a pain in the ass. I would rather not have been there. But in my case it wasn't intolerable. Now the digital rectal exam I got from a couple of doctors - that was way worse than my biopsy.

Zowie.... I love your userID,

Come on now.... tell it like it is..... Your biopsy consists of having your Doctor perform your favorite French past time pleasure..... sending your pet "a la Gerbil" LIDOCAINE to explore your cave and if needed perform a painless biopsy...

p.s. Don't forget to feed LIDOCAINE...some French toast....

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.
