Conclusions
Our results highlight the capability of ALCAR to down-modulate growth, adhesion, migration and invasion of prostate cancer cells, by reducing the production of several crucial chemokines, cytokines and MMP9. ALCAR is a widely diffused dietary supplements and our findings provide a rational for studying ALCAR as a possible molecule for chemoprevention approaches in subjects at high risk to develop prostate cancer. We propose ALCAR as a new possible “repurposed agent’ for cancer prevention and interception, similar to aspirin, metformin or beta-blockers.
So in layman's terms: is this something we/I can safely take when we/I already have PCa?
Second question: since it says "similar to aspirin" would this give "false" lower PSA levels?

I have been taking alpha lipoic acid for neuropathy of my feet (not diabetic) for last 2 years ( got from taking statins) how much Acetyl L Carnitine do you take?
LACAR can increase mitochondrial ROS leakage so adding alpha lipoid acid as an intracellular antioxidant scavenger seems a good idea. The combo is also being studied in longevity research. Consider using both together regardless of efficacy on PN.
To all of us who only have a high school education, and tried to look this meaning, but without a medical degree, what does mitochondrial ROS leakage mean?
Mitochondria are the little factory "units" (organelles) inside of every cell that process our energy, turning our food, broken down into small carbon units, into usable energy (ATP) by combining them with Oxygen and thus releasing as CO2. This process is imperfect in that some small amount of the oxygen goes off as dangerous Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS -including hydroxyl , superoxide, and hydrogen peroxide.) These are very destructive to our cellular machinery and damage, not only the mitochondria - making them leak even more of the ROS - but also to our DNA. So it is a slippery slope and is part of what makes us decline with aging (senescence) and accelerates the genetic damage that underlies cancer progression. Carnitine is the molecule that carries the food bits into the mitochondria to be burned with oxygen. But more mitochondrial activity means more ROS to leak out. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant that works inside the cell and can neutralize the ROS. So that is why it makes sense to combine carnitine (ALCAR) supplementation with ALA. Both are over the counter supplements. I take both myself though they have not been proven to have benefits in randomized clinical trials. So discuss with your MO first.
This is interesting. Plant based foods have a lot of anti oxidants in it..but it still improves cancer survival . If antioxidants are really that bad..I should have been dead by now as my diet which is rich in veggies and fruits contain big amounts of anti oxidants. I eat Okra frequently which has glutathione but has not caused harm. Other things like red grapes, pomegranade, guava are loaded with antioxidants but are deemed to work against cancer. I will take this research study with a grain of salt.
To supplement one's diet with products which nobody knows for sure what they have in the pills/capsules, is different from eating a healthy diet. The foods you eat contain other chemicals besides the antioxidants and who knows how they interact in the body. The foods are not "pure antioxidant".

You just said what I truly believe. And that is that anti oxidant, anti inflammatories in natural products does not harm. I have been doubtful about heavy duty synthetic antioxidants and do not take them. But I would not quit eating Guava, Munakka grapes, pomegranades,, apple peels, gourds, cauliflowers, radishes ,Turmeric, Ginger, Onion, Garlic ,mint, parsley, rosemary, oragano ,coriander etc etc. My diet is giving me C reactive protein of 0.4 mg/L ...means almost no inflammation and I am loving it.
Just discovered this thread. Just to point out those are Pro Vitamin A antioxidants. Not all antioxidants work the same. Antioxidants like Lycopene and Sulforphane (both shown to possibly have beneficial effects related to PCa) are non Pro Vitamin A antioxidants that there is no evidence that either of them, at least when not combined with other supplements, promote cancer progression. (There's evidence Selenium can promote progression which is sometimes taken in combination with these other substances.)
