Blood transfusion vs. IV Iron ??

What’s the difference and is it true once you get a blood transfusion you have to keep getting them ??

My Dads MO wants to do IV iron instead of blood transfusion...any thoughts or experience with this?

Thank you🙏🏽

I had Injectafer, a type of IV Iron. administered it in two doses about a week apart.

It seems to have solved my low hemoglobin and low red blood cell issue.

Do you know if your iron level was normal before being given those treatments?

Iron was low. Not extremely but it was low

I have had several iron infusions. Some Pca treatments reduce iron in the blood and when it gets to a certain point an infusion is needed.

Iron is indicated in microcytic and hypochromic anemias, and when an iron deficiency is diagnosed (low ferritin).

In general, the anemia caused by PC is a normocytic normochromic anemia.

It depends on what is causing his anemia.

When testosterone is low the red blood cell count goes down. RBCs contain hemoglobin which carries oxygen from the lungs. & so, ADT results in anemia - or borderline anemia.

As the name suggests, hemoglobin has an iron component. Many assume that anemia is caused by an iron deficiency, but iron should never be given to a man who is iron-sufficient. He should be tested first.

Here is what Dr Myers had to say about iron in PCa:

Unless the anemia is caused by low iron, iron won't help to reolve it and can actually cause more problems.

Transfusion gives you the bricks (red blood cellls) with an expected lifespan of 120 days. Iron gives you the material to make the bricks (blood cells) grown in the bone marrow. Not true that you keep needing transfusions IF the bone marrow is working.

In my experience, the addition of iron from either supplements or food sources (heme iron) acts as an accelerant for cancer growth. Good diets have gone bad once (excessive) iron was introduced, and then returned to a working diet once the iron source was removed.

You can search on iron and prostate cancer to get more information. I would make sure your MO is aware of this risk before using IV iron.

I think your M O has his mind on golf "IV IRON". For hitting into greens, the 4-hybrid is the best play for most. Golfers across the board hit more fairways with a 4-iron.
