Prostate Cancer Diet Update . . . . 9/2020

cashlessclay profile image
ā€¢49 Replies

Another PSA reading appears to show that my cancer growth continues to be contained using diet and moderate exercise.

Last five PSA's are 0.415, 0.363, 0.312, 0.305 and 0.243 on September 1, 2020.

The last test was at 6 months, the first four tests were 5 weeks apart.

These results come from a diet that minimizes insulin response and contains little iron. The baseline is a vegan diet that allows some wild caught seafood, and does not allow foods that promote a large insulin response. I have no sweets, potatoes nor bread. The diet contains soy. I also have about 6 raspberries and ample walnuts on steel cut oatmeal, cooked til dry, and served without milk.

I walk about 2-2.5 miles per day, immediately after breakfast.

Have you had any ADT cashless? Or just the RP and SRT?

Just the RP and SRT.

CC: good stuff, thanks for posting. That's a pretty spartan diet, wonder how many calories/day you are taking? Are you at normal weight? I think it's all about controlling insulin levels (sugar intake as reflected in triglyceride levels) and saturated fats (animal protein as reflected in LDL levels). Also, limiting foods with documented associations with PCa progression, such as milk (caesin) and eggs (correction: choline). After diagnosis, and before treatment, I was able to extend my PSA-DT to about 14 months on a similar diet.

Timotur, Milk has been proved harmless in a very big Milk clinical study only last year. A small amount of Milk or Yogurt should not be a problem. This large study clarified the Milk issue as previous studies have been contradictory. In form of Cheese or a lot of milk products can cause weight gain and make our Lipids go up, and that's not good for us.

As for Eggs, yes..Choline in eggs has cancer promoting effect. I am on similar diet to cashless clay with exception of a cup of fat free yogurt and some fresh fruits like apple, pome egranade , Guava and occasional banana. Absolutely NO fruit juice or canned fruits.

This Milk study involves almost 50,000 people. You can check it at the link below:

Title: Dairy Product Consumption and prostate cancer Risk in US (P05-034-19)

LA: yes, my bad, it's choline in eggs, not leutine, that's been associated with PCa progression. Here are the risk factors noted in this study in order of decreasing effect....

Increased risk

BMI****

Smoking****

Dairy/calcium**

Processed red meat*

Eggs/choline*

Poultry (w/skin)*

Animal fat/saturated fat*

Selenium supplementation*

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Yes, I've read that epidemiologic study about milk, but I tend to err on the side of biochemistry in forming my opinion on associations with PCa progression, such as the study linked below about caesin in milk associated with increase proliferation of prostate cancer cells, PC3 and LNCaP.

PC3 cells treated with 1 mg/mL of Ī±-casein and casein showed increased proliferation (228% and 166%, respectively), and the proliferation of LNCaP cells was also enhanced by 134% and 142%, respectively...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

I haven't entirely eliminated milk, but have cut way back to some powdered milk and occasional yogurt, and switched mostly to goat milk, which has the less harmful form of caesin. Before diagnosis, I was drinking 1-2 gallons per week, and IMO was one of the things that led to my PCa progression.

LearnAll profile image
LearnAllā€¢ in reply totimotur

I suspect my egg consumption (6 to 8 eggs/day) prior to diagnosis has some role in promoting PCa. Not even one egg after diagnosis.

timotur profile image
timoturā€¢ in reply toLearnAll

Yes, me too, I was eating an egg every day before diagnosis. Now I only eat about 3 eggs/week, only for the lutein, which is associated with decreased risk of macular degeneration.

Evidence is now accumulating that dietary and blood concentrations of lutein and zeaxanthin, 2 oxygenated carotenoids that concentrate in the macula of the eye, are associated with reduced risk of AMD... Lutein and zeaxanthin play a role in the prevention of AMD by aiding in the filtering of damaging blue light and sunlight (13). Because AMD is thought to be associated with long-term oxidative damage to the retina (14,15), the reported findings, that lutein and zeaxanthin are 2 very powerful antioxidants, absorb ultraviolet light, and serve to protect the lens from oxidative damage... our study demonstrated that consuming only 1 store-bought egg/d in a population with a mean age of 79 y can significantly increase both serum lutein and zeaxanthin concentrations without elevating serum TC and LDL-C concentrations.

I eat Saffron (spice) to prevent macular degeneration.

Cheerr profile image
Cheerrā€¢ in reply totimotur

Do you eat the whole egg? Or just the egg whites? I heard egg whites are harmless for pca but is egg yolk bad?

timotur profile image
timoturā€¢ in reply toCheerr

I eat the whole egg to get the lutein, which is in the yolk. The lutein is associated with PCa progression, but lutein also helps prevent macular degeneration, so I split the difference and reduced egg consumption to one every other day.

Not milk?!?! I live on nonfat milk - it goes so well with my daily pb&j, and with dinner - I drink maybe a pint a day. Plus a couple of those small nonfat yogurts a day. And a 100% whey protein drink in the morning. And take 600mg of calcium to balance the 400mg of magnesium (both time release). I don't know what I'd do for food without milk - for sure lose a lot of food enjoyment. I must be luckier than I thought that my PC hasn't been worse.

I also drink milk and eat yogourt every day. They are a good source of calcium for the bones and my doctor says it is better to get calcium from natural foods rather than supplements. I think the key with everything related to diet is moderation.

LearnAll profile image
LearnAllā€¢ in reply tokapakahi

There is no final word by researchers about Milk. I still eat fat free yogurt every day and it does go so well with my vegan diet. My personal belief is that Milk and Yogurt is safe if used in moderation.

What are your thoughts on egg whites?

Schwah

LearnAll profile image

Egg whites are 99.9% Albumin and water . It should be fine. I think yellow portion is the problem.

Timotur, I'm very thin having lost about 35 lbs on this diet. My added sugar intake is about zero. Triglycerides are fifty something, down from about 200. Adding some raspberries had a noticeable positive affect, and well as including some soy. Removing those two and my diet is unlikely to work. But, without controlling insulin and iron spikes, there is no diet.

Cashless

timotur profile image
timoturā€¢ in reply tocashlessclay

That's a great turnaround, losing 35 lbs, and the very low triglyceride number indicates you're avoiding insulin spikes. Excellent results, well worth the effort...!

What about egg whites and any dairy in your diet ?

Schwah

cashlessclay profile image
cashlessclayā€¢ in reply toSchwah

Schwah, I do not have whole eggs in the diet, but I have never tested egg whites.

There is no dairy now, but had gouda cheese made with goats milk for a few months without a problem.

What is your Gleason score? Are you metastatic or have you had any chemo, radiation, immunotherapy or ADT? Thanks!

cashlessclay profile image
cashlessclay

Gleason scores: biopsy (4,3), pathology (3,3) . . . different labs. PSADT post surgery and post SRT of 7 months. Likely out of the prostate bed. It's unlikely that nutrition would be able to stop an aggressive form of cancer, but it's likely that my diet could be improved . . . and it has already resulted in PSA decreasing. Note, If I let up on the diet the PSA will quickly start rising again. I have already seen a diet stop working by such things as presoaking the oatmeal, cooking the oatmeat with too much water, adding too much (almond) milk, and adding too much fruit.

Good to read that things are working well for you.

I would think that pathology from a removed prostate to be more accurate. Have been reading more frequently that 3+3 is considered INDOLENT and thus very unlikely to metastasize with initial treatment followed by diet and exercise one lives to die of something else and not prostate cancer.

cashlessclay profile image
cashlessclayā€¢ in reply toaddicted2cycling

addicted2cycling,

I have always considered Gleason scores of 3 or 4 a matter of judgement, and that actual cancers could be anywhere between the two. Perhaps, someday, A.I. will be calling it a Gleason 3.4.

However, I do find a doubling time of 7 months moderately aggressive, so controlling it is important to me.

Personal comfort level for approaching treatment is priority and IMO that begins with research and obtaining the most complete (i.e. - accurate) biopsy that is verified by at least one independent 2nd opinion. Too much OVER TREATMENT is still happening that might not improve one's long term outcome but can give peace of mind yet result in unwanted side effects.

Not to be disrespectful,
