So my sweetie has been on lupron now for 5 years plus. He had his shot on Tuesday and we are taking a vacation in Hawaii. He is miserable in the hot weather. He is taking Effexor already. Any ideas?

Lupron and hot weather
Aloha, just got back from Hawaii (grew up there) last week - saw ohana(family). It was pretty much 81 that whole time and pretty humid too. Hydrate, wear hats, and breathable, wicking white long sleeves. If you're staying in Waikiki, there are so many places to just pop into if a hot flash hits then he can go and get cooled off in a/c.
Have a blast out there, try local foods if you're willing. Go to local hangouts eg: Zippy's, Rainbow Drive Inn, and Helena's for pretty legit Hawaiian food. The Ala Moana shopping center has a food court that has a really wide selection of cuisines. It's outside of Waikiki tho

Enjoy your vacation! The islands are so relaxing Which island are you visiting? If at all possible get a room with AC! We stayed on Oahu and Maui December 2018 and neither place had AC . We've already decided when we return that we only stay somewhere with AC even if it's much more expensive. We stayed on the balcony all the time but it made sleeping difficult as we both get hot flashes.
I use small fans at my desk and on my nightstand. I’ve heard some use a small fan attached to a misting bottle for hot weather. Maybe that could help?
I suffered thru two and a half years before starting Estrogen patches which totally resolved my hot flash problem. Not a single hot flash now. Get your oncologist to prescribe them. They improved my quality of life tremendously!!
Hang in the pool and love life. It works
Aloha and Mele Kalikimaka NWLiving,
Check out the many cooling vests and head wear available online. I use Mission Cooling products. Have a great vacation! 🌴
Thanks so much! Very helpful ideas.
Get on Amazon, they have a small hand held fan that works great, you can just use it or add water to the sponge to get better cooling. I have two of them. I will tell you that for me high humidity makes my hot flashes worse. In the summer I have to carry a large kerchief . Keep up the fight
Estrogen patches work very well, I’ve been using them for about 5 years now. I’ve been on Lupron for almost 6 years. I used to get hourly, intense hot flashes, now I still get them now and then but nothing compared to the way it was.
Be sure to pack loose, comfortable moisture wicking clothing. Columbia makes some good products and you can purchase on line, same goes for most of the larger clothing manufacturers. Keep it loose and light.

I am just completing 36 months of Lupron/Casodex and also live in a climate with warm and humid summers. I found that guayabera style shirts that are not tucked in made a large difference. When you think of golf shirts, you think summer cool but they were the least breathable for me.
Have a great trip
Yes: get him on estradiol patches right away. They make life on ADT so much nicer. I would start with 2 of the 0.10 mg/24 hour twice-weekly patches and change one daily. Most of the estradiol is delivered and absorbed in the first 24 to 48 hours. After a week he can probably titrate down to one patch changed every two days. Possibly even less. If he develops breast tenderness and swelling as is common with this taking a daily 10mg. Tamoxifen handles this nicely. I have not personally tried the progesterone patch but would consider a trial if there was a major concern about cardiovascular risk of estrogen. (Though this has not emerged as an increased risk in the estradiol patch studies.)
I was on a six month Eligard from October through March -- the six 'cool' months in Phoenix. I don't know what I would do if I had to deal with that in the blazing hot months of the desert here.

Get him off that garbage before he develops CRPC like they all do...
It does seem to be getting better now that we’ve had a few days to adjust. Merry Christmas!
Mahalo! Good news🌈🌊
The oncology doc said she was reluctant to prescribe estrogen patches until he was back in Washington where he could be monitored. Also she also had some questions about pre- authorization? His hot flashes normally are one a night right after he gets his shots but not so frequent later. We also live in the coast in Washington with cool weather. So generally they have not been a problem.
So we inadvertently created a perfect storm of hot flashes when we jumped on a plane after his shot and landed in 85degree weather. We have changed our expectations, slowed down, and are letting our bodies adjust as we enjoy the scenery and views.
He’s also really good about my separate walks and exercising at the gym so I don’t get crabby too.
Take care you guys and gals. Sometimes it’s a frustrating path but so worth the time together.
