Hi all, my husband is in BCR since last summer after treatment in 2014 for a Gleason 9. He had surgery followed by adjuvant radiation and no other treatment since. He has found out that he has PTEN deletion and so I was interested in the article sciencedaily.com/releases/2... . It is essentially a mouse study but maybe onto something. I sure hope so as he has been following a low fat vegan diet for close to 6 years. Anyone heard of this association?

Low fat vegan diet and PTEN deletion
Thanks for posting. Very interesting. Best of luck
Looked at the paper you cited and I quote from it:
<When Pandolfi and colleagues increased the levels of saturated fats -- the kind found in fast food cheeseburgers and fries -- in the animals' diet, the mice developed aggressive, metastatic tumors.>
The dietary change used was addition of SATURATED FAT.
If your husband is on a "low fat vegan diet",is his diet beans, greens, grains, fruit berries, soy products and NO nuts or seeds?. As you know nuts and seeds are high in UNSATURATED FATS
Please note Patandemma that the famous Adventist study (70k+ subjects) analyzed the vegetarians and a subset of vegans separately. Longevity of both groups significantly exceeds the American population. (Adventists are heavily vegetarian for religious reasons and they are discussed extensively in Buettner's "The Blue Zones"). Investigators compared vegans who ate NO nuts to vegans who regularly consumed nuts. They found the nut-eating vegans on average lived two years longer than the No-nut group.
Forgive me for being obtuse, but are we in disagreement ?
I am a vegan prolific nut and seed eater and my diet is very low in saturated fat and probably high in unsaturated fat.
I was con fused by the statement by FSB12 that her husband was on a "low fat vegan diet" That phrase suggested he was eschewing saturated AND unsaturated fat and she was missing the key phrase in the ScienceDaily article she cited
"Aw, nuts."
My husband does eat avocado and some nut butter, usually I cook with little olive oil. I think that he is afraid of nuts :).
I expected some mouse jokes, disappointed. Anyway, we are stressed out waiting on a PSA result so jokes are welcome. All the best.
