Is going into Ketosis to lose weight safe on hormone therapy?

I’ve gained excessive weight since being on ADT particularly in the gut. Is it safe to go on Ketosis to lose weight? Has anyone tried Pruvit ketones?

The ketogenic diet is frequently used for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. It is safe enough to be used on very young children, so I wouldn't expect a problem. However, no PCa trials yet.

It's a tough diet. A low carb diet is a fall-back.

I don’t expect any trials as it’s not a drug

I have done ketogenic diet since dx, Sept 2018. I am on zytiga, and Super ADT (orchiectomy). I guess my medications are still working as my psa is undetectable since Jan 2019. Before I started zytiga, it was much easier to stay in ketosis, but the zytiga counteracts your diet and raises your blood sugar anyway. But I keep my blood sugar low, 70 to 90 I guess. The diet is really hard to figure out initially, and it is hard to keep at it. The following are low carb foods, about 4 percent net carbs by weight, or less, the best to eat in order:

Broccoli Sprouts

Romaine Lettuce

Bok Choy

Alfalfa Sprouts

Spinach

Collard Greens

Avocado

Zuccini

Green Onions

Flax Ground

Mushrooms, white

Cherry Tomatoes

Kalamata Olives

Cauliflower

Olives, ripe, canned

Cucumber

Red Pepper

Broccoli

If you eat meat, I guess that has little to know carbs. Cheese can have close to zero. I try and get most of my calories from fat, such as olive oil. And with this post of mine, I make mistakes, so any guidance or corrections is welcome.

Thanks ; I eat most of that now. Plus fruit, yogurt, chicken, salmon, shellfish. There’s this ketone powder by Pruvit which you mix in a shake . Sounds interesting.

And form of ADT causes weight gain and Zytiga is a form of ADT .

Don't know about others but over two years on Zytiga and prednisone i gained 20 lbs, all in the gut area. Now trying KETO to lose it!

Same here....I just started a low carb "diet". Nothing fancy yet but from what I'm seeing for the Keto diet I'll be eating a lot of the same things. Good luck with your diet!

With one complication, stressing your body with ketosis seems like not the best idea. Why not try skipping lunch and doing 14 hour fasts every other day first?

I’m working on it eating less and better; feeling lighter already (lol)! Just needed to get started.

I'm not a fan of these fad diets. We should all eat a well balanced diet with lots of vegetables and fruit. Our body breaks down whatever we swallow into simple compounds that our cells need.

To me, if a person wants to lose weight, he/she reduces the portion size and gets more exercise. These fad diets help by getting people to pay attention to what they are eating and that is a good thing. The same, however, can be done with a general well balanced diet.

I don't ban any food items out of my diet, including the odd dessert. Eating should be enjoyable. I just make sure my diet is mostly a variety of unprocessed plant-based foods and I don't overeat.

Got it! Stuffing yourself cause you’re addicted to food is the cause of weight gain.

Not necessarily. The ADT caused me to gain 25 lbs. Fortunately I've been able to slowly lose 10 of it by reducing my portions and increasing my exercise. I'm hoping to lose a little more. Good luck in your quest.

The diet is good for some of us, but not all of us. Although I am not showing signs of PCa at his time, I have kidney stage 5 disease. Many of the foods listed are high in Potassium which I can not get rid of with kidney disease. Some of the foods have Vitamin K which I have to avoid because I have heart disease and am taking Coumadin and Plavix. Vit K can easily lower the effects of Coumadin causing me a blood clot and stroke. Many salad greens have Vit K along with cauliflower and broccoli. I am diabetic and need to avoid any foods high in calories like fat and simple carbohydrates. It is hard for my kidney to digest more than three ounces of protein at any meal No beef or pork. Any processed foods with Phosphates (preservatives) must be avoided so no canned goods or processed snack foods. Any food high in sodium and Phosphorus must be avoided like bacon, ham, hot dogs, corned beef, sausage, or prepackaged meets (Hormel). I need to avoid nuts and chocolate because of Phosphates and sugar. Because of high Potassium I have to avoid tomatoes, potatoes, avocados, bananas, oranges, black beans, bran and granola. So I eat fresh foods. I live near a grocery store that has no preservatives or food colors added. So I am not a candidate for the Ketone diet. Please remember that each of us have other diseases before suggesting a new therapy and ASK YOUR DOCTOR FIRST!

My husband has been on ADT since 1/17. He got serious about 6 weeks ago with low carb and has lost about 10 pounds. He eats a salad for lunch and we have meat and a low carb veggie for dinner. If he snacks it's on meat and cheese. We've both reduced our drinking to the weekend only (got carried away after the initial diagnosis) and that's helped a lot. He also uses the stair stepper daily. My keto is different - I do low carb, low fat and low calories and have lost 12#'s in 6 weeks but I can only loose weight if I cut calories. I would advise staying away from the high fat (butter coffee type) of LCHF - calories in and calories out is always sound advice. And artificial ketones won't really help. If you stay under 50 carbs a day you'll be in ketosis naturally.

Hello Break60,

Ketogenic diets are characterized by low carbs, moderate protein and high fat intake. Unlike other cancers (e.g., glioblastoma) which have a high dependency on glucose, PCa cells are capable of metabolizing all three dietary components. I started a ketogenic diet during chemo in 2016 but stopped when I discovered PCa's metabolic flexibility. Ketogenic diets are very difficult to follow and maintain.

Caloric reduction (CR) and exercise have been show not to work for the majority of people. (see The Diabetes Code, by Dr. Jason Fung). You stay hungry all the time and recidivism is high. CR causes the metabolic rate to drop as well, which defeats the diet. On the other hand, exercise should always be undertaken to maintain muscle and bone mass, and its many other benefits.

A couple of months ago I stated what is called time restricted feeding (TRF) - fasting for 14 to 18 hours a day and eating only during a 6 to 8 hour window. Some refer to this regimen as intermittent fasting (IF), but I consider IF to entail not eating for a full day, once or twice a week. I have been on Lupron (androgen deprivation therapy) since 2016 and I have lost 8 lbs on TRF over the last two months while eating a low carb and low glycemic index diet. TRF is easier to do and weight loss will be more gradual. If you can incorporate 1 or 2 days of supervised intermittent fasting, then you will lose more weight. I hope this helps. Cheers, Phil
