I have a family member who has PC, bladder radiation burns and bleeding. His doctors can not figure out the bleeding and the large clots that form in his catheter. They are now trying hyperbaric oxygen therapy but that is not working. He lives in the West Chicago suburbs. Any suggestions?

bladder radiation burns
Sorry you and family are going through this. The only thing I'd say do to my own recent experience with bladder issues is don't take any vitamin C supplements, and I guess watch out for citrus drinks too. My urinary track practically shuts down with them.
Interesting, Thanks
Hemorragic cystits is a complex subject. This link have some info about diagnosis, treatment etc.
Hi
Had a similar problem with bleeding. Had Hyperbaric O2 treatment, a total of 80 treatments over a year period. Haven't had a bleed for nearly 3 years. I believe in Hyperbaric, it takes time but certainly does good. Don't give up.
How long ago was the radiation? I had 39 treatments 4 years ago for recurrent PC. I have trace amounts of blood in my urine and burning in my groin at times. Urologist doesn’t seem concerned.
I was just told by my urologist that I may need a CT scan to check out my Kidneys and bladder after my urine test showed red blood cells in it that had not been there before. I did have an in- office cystoscopy but more to rule out a stricture. I had IMRT(35 treatments) over 8 months ago. I know it hit my bladder and bowels hard. The cramping in both for 60-90 minutes post treatment was terrible. I had to stay near a restroom until it subsided. Now I wonder if the red blood cells in my urine could be related to the IMRT
I developed radiation proctitis about one year out from proton beam therapy. My anus was bleeding so much that I had to have eight units of blood over a three month period. To stop the bleeding, I've had four treatments of radiofrequency ablation (cauterization via microwave). The bleeding has nearly stopped after the treatments). As inconvenient as the radiation proctitis has been, I consider it a battle scar in my fight against cancer. From the time I was diagnosed until now, my PSA has gone from 6.0 to 0.13. The proton beam therapy is worth it.
Avoid NSAIDS or vit E or anything else that could act as a blood thinner? That is standard advice preceding surgery or a biopsy. He's probably already gotten this advice from his doctor. I know from personal experience how distressing it is to see blood in your urine. That problem resolved for me after a short time.
I had 40 IMRT treatments in early 2006 with Gleason 7 and PSA 23. My PSA has never been higher than 0.2 since. Two years ago I had a day where I peed blood. Then in late June, a month ago I had another episode, and have had four more since. Large amounts of blood and some clots. No associated pain. A CT with contrast this past week was negative and showed my kidneys, ureters, and bladder is fine. The next step is a cystoscopy, which my HMO can't do for a month. My urologist suspects it could be bladder wall issues related to the IMRT treatments 13 years ago. We'll see.
In 2008 or thereabouts, I had bleeding in my rectal tissue due to radiation proctitis (burn) that was a result of radiation therapy (SBRT) couple of years before. The treatment for the bleeding was done at UT Southwestern, as an outpatient process. The treatment is called Argon Plasma Coagulation. Mine was fixed on just one treatment.
I had radiation proctitus after SRT . Radio frequency ablation cured it but it took about a year for anal bleeding to completely stop. Not sure how bladder bleeding is cured.
My urologist and oncologist both agreed radiation was a non issue for me. After Prostatectomy and scans showed radiation to cancer would burn bladder and rectum, no radiation. Chemo, ADT for life (till orchiectomy ) and 2 yrs. after surgery PSA steady at 0.130 +-. New normal sucks, but I'm still here.
