Radiation

I will see my Radiation Onocologist for the first time tomorrow. Anyone have suggestions for questions I should ask and how long should I wait after my surgery to start radiation.

Here are some questions:

If you take ADT, you can delay SRT for many months while your tissues heal.

Visited the Dr. Today. Printed a list of the questions. He answered all questions and we my daughter wrote down the answers Dr. was impressed with the questions asked.

You want an explanation of the advantages and disadvantages of imrt vs sbrt radiation therapy from both an imrt and an sbrt radiation oncologist.

But even with the side effects of salvage radiation, we don't have the choice to not go through it. The alternative is just hormonal therapy, right?

These all are like defence lines, that will delay the progression of APC, and people with agrassive 8 and up scores (like me) are less likely to get a"cure" from this disease, unless if we are very lucky!

Not trying to discourage anyone to go through all and any possible treatment that can extend our lives and me too in my way to start salvage radiation. So I wish you the best of good luck with your radiation therapy.

Please keep us updated with any side effects, and it is possible that you will not get any side effects just mild ones.

Start Lupron, find the best advanced prostate cancer professional available and listen to this person on when to start. I chose the academia and research route rather than private practice as they have the greater flexibility with treatment protocols and are on top of their game.

Any insight on using Proton in lieu of IMRT or SBRT?

in reply toLongterm101

No. It was relatively new in 2004. Part of my primary treatment was 25 sessions of IMRT. My Gatstroentrologist remarks that I have very little scarring. None on the right side and very little on the left side. This is attributed to the good Professors, Dr. Brian Butler and Dr. Bin Teh. They use a unique rectal catheter. Balloon that they fill with water to keep everything out of the way and the prostate in place. Butler pioneered the technique. I do not know how wide it’s use is today.

Where did u have your Radiation done?

in reply toLongterm101

Brachytherapy in San Antonio with Dr Brad Prestridge. IMRT with Dr Brian Butler (I also saw Dr Bin Teh) at Methodist in Houston, both at the time were Professors at Baylor College of Medicine and now Weill-Cornell Medical School.

Proton was originally considered superior to other forms of radiation.

I don't know if that is still the case.

I would check with Tall_Allen.

Just be aware of the potential complications - although I felt like I had no choice other than to undergo EBRT. In my case it caused an ED issue as well as radiation proctitis.
