We went to dr after not going for a number of years, my husband's PSA was 153 June 2018, started Luprone 4wks later PSA 37 July 2018,🙏🏼
Started 7/19/2018 taking Zytiga/1000mg Prednisone/5mg twice a day, and luprone every 3months moving forward.
I will continue to pray those living with cancer and their love ones!
I'm concerned about all the drug and grateful too, but what concerns me, is the prednisone, in reading some of the previous post, it seems that 5mg works well with the Zytiga. I will have to ask the dr.
In prayer.

I think it's fairly common for doctors to prescribe 5mg of Prednisone. That's the approximate dose of equivalent corticosteroids your body produces naturally. You lose these naturally produced steroids when taking Zytiga so 5mg of Prednisone will replace them. If you take more than that, your body may lose some of the ability to produce them naturally should you ever stop taking Prednisone.
I am currently taking Zytiga with 5mg of Prednisone. So far, no problems although it's only been 2 weeks so far.
The standard of care is TWO 5 mg doses of prednisone (one in the morning, one at night) when taking Zytiga. It is only enough to replace what was lost and does not add add significant toxicity. However, everyone is different, so it may have to be adjusted up or down - you will only know if he has symptoms of adrenal insufficiency.
I had 18 months of 10mg daily and my MedOnc reduced this 6 months ago to 5 mg. My diabetic meds began to work properly @ 5 with nil other effects. All OK.
Ask your onc,i have taken zitiga for the past year with 5 mg of prednisone, I am going to take it right now,
I got severe headaches, which a neurologist concluded were caused by prednisone. I reduced to one 5 mg dose, which did seem to help with the headaches. Prednisone can also have adverse effects on the immune system.
In the both the STAMPEDE and LATITUDE trials, they used one dose of 5mg Prednisone daily with Abiraterone (Zytiga).

gregg57 - Are you "skipping" Provenge or holding back?

I only have the VA and so far they haven't mentioned it as an option. I don't think they do Provenge. I'll be on Medicare next July and would be able to consider it then.
This topic has come up before. I can't find the paperwork but I believe that the prescribing instructions for Zytiga talks about cases where you take 5mg once per day and cases where you take it twice a day. On a side note, I take 5mg twice a day with no obvious issues.
