New Here - Can You Recommend an Atlanta Medical Oncologist

I am going to change my medical oncologist. I am only using the current oncologist to get labs and a firmagon shot every month.

In any case, I want to change to another medical oncologist. I am looking for someone who keeps updated with current discoveries, has at least cursory knowledge of current studies, is comfortable advising and letting patient have final decision on treatment, is comfortable recommending stepping over the standard-of-care line when they have a sound reason, and is someone with whom you can have a comfortable conversation. I am willing to travel to states adjacent to Georgia, but prefer someone in Atlanta.

I would appreciate it if you have a recommendation.

Hang in, you will get some excellent referrals as soon as tomorrow. Another thing, you don't have to appreciate anything. We are a family here in the truest sense of the word. I would go over Niagara Falls in a barrel for you.

Good Morning Sam-son,

For the past 5 1/2 years I have been very satisfied with Dr. Vasily Assikis of the Piedmont Cancer Institute. I have always had a combo of Med Oncs.

First is was Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers plus Dr. Assikis and now it is Dr. Oliver Sartor plus Dr. Assikis.

Dr. Assikis directed my recent 6 cycles of Docetaxel/Carboplatin chemo. He is current with all the latest treatments and trials and Piedmont has a great imaging facility--I had an Axumin PET/CT there in September. Please see my bio for full treatment history.

Best wishes. Never Give In.

Mark, Atlanta

Hey Sam,

I've been seeing Ron Steis out of Northside Hospital/Atlanta Cancer Care for the past 2 1/2 years, I was originally DX in early 2014. I was also a patient of Dr. Snuffy Myers for 2+ years until his recent retirement - Snuffy was the one who referred me to Steis. I am now a patient of Dr. Sartor in NOLA who has replaced Snuffy. Steis, Snuffy and Sartor all know one another from time spent at the NIH.

Steis is not a PCa expert but is knowledgable of treatment options. I use Northside for labs and treatment but view Sartor as the lead doc on my case and Steis has never had a problem with that arrangement. He is easy going, listens well and spends adequate time with me.

Feel free to message me and we can share contact info if you like since we're both in the ATL.

DR. OMER KUCUK, without a doubt! At Emory's Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta. Husband diagnosed in 2010 with PSA at 20.4. . Prognosis maybe two or three years, but I credit God, Dr. Kucuk, and my husband's determination for his survival past that prognosis. He lived until October 2015 . . . 5+ years! Dr. KUCUK was open to any of our ideas and would reply promptly to every e-mail and phone call. A sensitive doctor to the concerns of both patient and spouse, which was so comforting. If you should choose to consult with him, please tell him that Mrs. Bishop referred you to him.
