Elgie's Chromogranin a lab result

LG's lab results just popped into the portal. The number on the chromogranin a is 23. It belongs under 5. I'm just not sure that's a huge difference. I just never know with labs.

Hi Jackie,

I tried looking up Chromogranin---and it's beyone my poor powers of comprehension---so complicated. Especially with the mental effects that I have from all of the heavy meds.

All I can do is to give you my love, best wishes and prayers. We feel so helpless when our friends are going through rough times. And I'm doing better today, I just have to wait until the 8th to get my scan results.

God bless you and Elgie in these difficult times,

Eric

I'm so glad you were doing better yesterday. I hope it will continue Eric. No worries we will eventually find out from the doctor. Probably nothing to worry about. I wish you another good day and I pray for good test. XOXO God bless you. Most sincere. Oh guess what LG went out to the golf course today. It made me so happy to see that he wanted to try or that he felt good enough to go try. :-)

That is a good day..

Chromogranin A is a marker associated with (but not necessarily indicative of) neuroendocrine prostate cancer. I was tested in 2014 and my number was 128. My oncologist at UCSF, a specialist in neuroendocrine PCa, did not seem overly concerned in the absence of further evidence.

Thank you so much for the input Steve. It relaxes my mind so much more.

I looked at my panels and didn't see chromogranin. Do you know what it is?

I think it is a tumor marker. Depending on the number I think depends on the size. It said something about carcinoma.

I am not going to worry about it any further until the doctor tells us otherwise W Rando. Thank you so very much.

Chromogranin results can vary widely according to the labove used to run the test. My first Chromogranin Ault was taken at Duke Hospital, but the blood test was actually run by Mayor. The upper end of "normal " on theirs is 100. I started at 320 before carcinoid surgery. Within a year post open, it was 110, and has stayed there. Last year, post prostate surgery, I switched to Wake Forest Hospital for prostate followup. Ware has run the chromogranin A twice now, andon't I was 20 the first time, and 15 the next. They uses a lab in California to do the test. For their test results, under 20 is normal. Your results were run where the <20 is normal. Elgin is at the high edge of normal. Like psa if it's at the edge of normal, most doctors won't worry. Wait and see if it's stable, or climbs over time, and how quickly. Then you'll know more. Right now, I don't think it's anything to worry about. My Best wishes.

Very informative Hadley cash. Thank you so very much for easing my mind. We did read that you had to have it done at the same lab facility each time in order to have a more accurate reading. The lab he went to set under 5 was normal. So they all must be extremely different. My best wishes to you and each and every one that has help me to feel more at ease. :-)

Although anti-androgen therapies have successfully extended life expectancies for many men with PCa, these same therapies have allowed cancer cells to sometimes evolve into more lethal sub types, such as neuroendocrine cancer. Chromogranin A is a marker for this sub type. I wish our Onc would test for it, but he diminishes our request.

I have read other men's' levels and some are in the 600s and higher. Carboplatin and other platinum based chemos are used for this sub type, I believe.

His lab says under 5 is normal. That's why we were concerned. He is a 23 but we haven't heard back from the doc so we're thinking it's okay. We put a message in almost a week ago.

Are you able to go to another doctor that will not diminish your request? We have a local oncologist and then we have dr. Myers in Virginia. We do not rely on the local oncologist. Thank you so much for your input and I'm really sorry that your doctor is not giving you what you are asking.
