Car got REPOSSESSED!!! HeLp

Oh my goodness, so I had my lease on auto pay, and I set it to end when the lease was up. In my mind, I thought the date was February. However the end date was July 25, 2022.

They came today, and took my car away. I was unaware that this was going to happen. Chrysler capital did leave me a computer message saying please call us back, but never said why they were calling. With my anxiety I have a hard time getting on the phone, so I thought if it was something real important they would mail me a letter.

Now I have a big mess, and I don’t know what to do, if I have my doctor submit a letter stating my mental conditions that I have, would this be of any help.

It’s not that I don’t have the money, they can clearly see that I have paid every month without being late, and they can see my banking account to see that the money is there.

UGG.... it’s situations like this, that make it so very difficult to prove that we are Neuro divergent, and our executive function is fair at best, causing mistakes like this, it is a disability in my opinion, however we are seldom accommodated because it’s “not a real problem”

Anyone who can help me with what I should do or what I can do, to avoid all of the extra fees that I’m going to have to pay to get my vehicle back I would appreciate your response.

I know: hurts ... but no need to shame yourself.

In this situation, I have found it best to lay out the embarrassing truth. Call the dealership or whoever ordered the repossession and ask to speak to a supervisor about what happened.

Lay out the truth. ADHD and anxiety and the rest. Give them the example of your desire to pay in full (they'll be able to call up your payments) ....that you had payments through July 2022 somehow by accident.

Explain that you did ignore the emails but that was because you assumed you were in good shape.

Ask for how you could get the car back. You will probably need to pay a fee for the cost of the repossession. But ask to get the car back.

Along the lines of "Is there a process I can go through or a fee I can pay to get the car back?" Count your money ... and see if you have enough to make up for the lump sum of the missing payments after July ... They'll probably ask for the lump sum to be paid ... be honest. If you don't have that, ask for a payment plan ...

The key thing is you have to feel the embarrassment and then push through it to talk to a human being. Explain yourself to a real human being on the other side.

Companies have their formulas ... but the fact you are calling ... raises your credibity ... the glitchy mistake is understandable ... the person on the other end might even have tips for keeping up with payments more easily ....

Note: this kind of thing happens ALL THE TIME with people with ADHD. And it's important to develop the skill of NOT ASSUMING the "catastrophe" is done, over, irreversible. Nonsense. Lots of things can be fixed, though it may cost you something (as in this case).

I once had a CC limit downgraded by a huge amount and I knew I needed the larger amount. I call the CC company and got to a guy ... and made it clear that yes, I was going to through a hard time but I had no intention of skipping payments. I pointed out that my car payment was ending soon ... and I'd have more money to pay down cc's ... Within a few days, the cc limit was raised back to the level I needed to function. (I have since paid it off.)

Anyway, these kinds of mistakes will happen for folks with ADHD--and you really have to learn to compassionately talk to yourself and to take action to not assume the mistake is going to ruin your life or that it's irreversible.

oh my goodness thank you for the response, I appreciate your advice and I am so thankful you read this LONGGGG post!! You are an angel 😇. It is so great that we have this to be able to talk with others who can relate to what we are going through. I do believe you are correct about everything. It is laying all out that I have not been comfortable doing, as I was told all of my formative years, “ stop making excuses “ “stop being lazy” “just try harder” “ you’re not trying enough” “suck it up everyone has problems” YIKES writing this makes my stomach hurt, literally. So I guess these are the “truths” I’ve been led to believe”

It sounds like you’ve made it past where I’m at, and I appreciate your willingness to help and share your cc limit raise request, and how you went about it.

Thankful for you!!

I hear you: I too grew up in a perfectionist household, like one mistake meant you deserved an avalanche of trouble.

Here's the thing. There will be a bunch of other people calling up for repossessed cars, some of them without ADHD. We are human ... and lots of interactions don't require that we be perfect. You typing in the wrong date for monthly payments is no big sin. People do that. Hang in there and update us with your progress.

I'm hoping you can indeed get the car back.
