This morning I was informed by my pharmacist that there is a national shortage of Adderall XR due to several factors. While it is debatable as to whether or not the medication was truly helping to alleviate my symptoms (I take 30 mgs of XR, which I feel is too low) I was wondering what other medications were available for treating ADHD, and what have been your experiences with them? This maybe the golden opportunity to talk to my doctor and convince them that the dosage is either too low, or that we need to change medications altogether.

Adderall XR Nationwide Shortage
Dextroamphetamine is a alternative. Dextroamphetamine is one of the two amphetamines in Adderall. Dextroamphetamine comes in immediate release and extended release.
The Adderall shortage has been going on for a while. But it does seem to depend on what part of the country you live in. I live in Louisiana and the friends I have that take Adderall have not had any problems getting their medication..
I wish I lived in a different region, for a variety of reasons and the Adderall shortage being just one of several. That being said, I guess the best thing to do would discuss it with my doctor and go from there. I still think that the Adderall dosage that I take is too low, but that is a whole other issue.
Adderall is generic so it's affordable. You could try Vyvanse which is also in the amphetamine family. It's not generic yet, so will for many people cost more. Dexedrine is also part of the amphetamine family.
Or you could try the Ritalin (methylphenidate family). What does your provider say. I'd just report the problem back to the provider and follow their guidance. All the meds are trial and error.
Vyvanase is off the table due to the cost and because it is one of the medications that all the pharmacies in this area either refuse to carry it, or simply do not. I plan on discussing this with my provider (my appointment is the 13th of this month) but she is on vacation at the moment. Her office assistant suggested I try a mail-order pharmacy but I have several reason for not going that route and would like to avoid it if possible.
there are plenty of other meds. I was on two thirties xr a day for ages and ages but my new doctor cut me to two to three of the twenty mg xr a day and then because of the shortage 20 mg ir X three I told him I want to go back to xr but due to the shortages all they had were 25 mg xr and fifteen mg ir so he gave me one of each which Is only 40 mg , and again I’m used to taking 60 mg and am pretty upset honestly I’ll probably as for a switch to a dexmethylphenidate like focalin xr but am not sure if he would be willing to give me two X thirty mg like I need (one xr dose of ANyTHInG doesn’t do it for me) and while they do make a forty mg I am worried I would still need a booster dose and not sure if they are going to be cool with that
I would also recommend looking at azstarys which is a dexmethylphenidate that’s supposed to last all day because half the drug is in form of a metabolic precursor to dexmethylphenidate anyhow the highest dose should be equal roughly to a 40 mg focalin xr
There’s also adhansia which I believe is a high dose ritilan xr ….
Or you could ask if your pharmacies have plain old Dexedrine that would be the closest thing to adderall… that or desoxyn (actual dexmethamp)
Also there are a number of other stimulants to choose from but i wouldn’t recommend anything other than amphetamine or methylphenidate type meds personally they are golden standard
