I hava a question with wanfacina

Good morning to the whole group. I have a doubt that it is generating anxiety. I have to give my son Intuniv ( guanfacina ), and the child psychiatrist tells me to give him 1 tablet because it is extended release, but my son is very young and weighs 20Kg, According to the package leaflet, weight MG x Kg should take less than half of the tablet. My question is: have any of you broken a tablet of these?. There are parents who go to the psychiatrist who do divide it, but I would like to know your experiences or opinions. I don't know if I have been able to explain myself well ... let alone translate the text. Thank you all very much for everything. Regards.

You should not cut any extended release medication. Please talk with your pharmacist regarding your concerns

Thank you very much for answering. Greetings

OK, first you got to get the dose down. You're saying the medication warning says cut the lowest dose in half for a certain weight?

Bring that to the attention of the doctor. Don't worry: doctors (if they are any good) appreciate you bringing info like this. Your doctor might have good reason--as in they're prescribed the same amount given to your son and it's worked for people of your son's weight.

Definitely great that you are keeping up with this. But call the doctor--get on the same page. You want to be able to trust the doctor. And sometimes trust requires us to ask our skeptical questions and then get an answer that is reassuring (as in we conclude the doctors knows their stuff). If not, you probably want to find a different doctor.

BTW: extended release meds are going to be higher than immediate release. So if your son is on 1mg extended release (all day) that's probably the equivalent of .5 immediate release (a few hours of the day taken multiple times).

Thank you very much for your advice. The child psychiatrist tells me to give it to her whole, and she ignores it more ... although I know and tell her that any medication has a lot of effect on my son, And for that reason I don't want to start with a dose that triples in weight ... but still tells me to give it to him entirely. That is my dilemma. Thank you very much for everything.

Sometimes meds aren't given by the weight of the person but by the symptoms. Never cut an extended release or fast acting release tablet. You don't say how old your child is.

You don't say what the mg. is- not that it matters to anyone other than the person taking it. Everyone is different.

Don't go by what other parents do.

There was a reason she gave him what was prescribed.

If you don't trust his doctor as to what she is prescribing/treating your child then find another one that you do trust.

Yes, I trust the doctor, the one who doesn't trust is the doctor, when I tell her that many medications have a very strong effect on my son, that's why I have my fears. Thank you for answering and for your advice. You are right that you have to trust doctors more, as I work with them, maybe that's why they create so much mistrust for me. A greeting.

Just remember all meds work differently.Give your son the prescribed medication. If there are any adverse reactions then let his doctor know. They don't stay in the system long. But you'll never know until you try. :)

Good luck!
