I'm new here. At age 60 I recently was diagnosed with ADHD. In my case I seem to suffer primarily from memory and impulsiveness (non financial thank goodness) along with emotional regulation challenges that are affecting my relationship with my wife. I'm considering medication options and wonder where to start. Is my PCP the right person to go to or should I go to a psychiatrist?

Considering Meds: Psychiatrist vs PCP
You can go to your PCP. They might be the best choice if you've been going to them for a while since they'll have more information on you. A psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD would probably know more about the medications available but the main ones are widely known. I still had to try about 8 different pills before I found the best meds for me so it's probably going to be a trial and error process with whoever you choose to go to.
Your PCP should be able to help you. I started on generic adderall at age 52, and find it helps me with focus, organization, and motivation, but not memory :(. Luckily, being more organized, I'm able to keep lists and reminders that have helped but my Apple Watch is a life saver! It's on my wrist and I can speak into it and tell it to remind me on X-day, at X-time to do X-thing. Best of luck!
Psychiatrist, they are highly trained in psychiatric medications. My primary care physician did not have a clue to what to prescribe. Just SayingHugs 🤗
To close this out, I went to my PCP who after a thorough conversation and evaluation of the testing report prescribed the minimum dose of Adderall XR. He also referred me to a psychiatrist to determine the right dose.
