Vacation
Hi, I get anxiety quite a bit and I get it even more on vacations. I have found some techniques that have helped me quite a bit. Why types of things are you anxious about?
Sometimes being away from a normal routine can be unsettling. For someone who finds routine comforting, having no routine can cause some anxiety. Are you home on vacation or away from home?
I tend to get anxiety during vacation because I don't have anything to fill that time up with. Then my ADD starts going and I think of everything I could be getting done or I have too much time to think about situations that are completely made up. If I have a schedule during vacation (ironic, I know) it helps me to stay relaxed. Or a list of things to do while on vacation. Sometimes I write down things I want to do or try while having free time so my thoughts are taken up by something else besides empty thoughts that get louder as the day goes on. When I have accomplished something, no matter how little, I feel so much better. Like I got up and changed out of my pajamas, I made breakfast, I started that new workout I have been wanting to do, I went for a walk and breathed in the fresh air, I took my dog to a different park, etc ... It also helps me to write down what I am feeling and really reflect on why I am feeling a certain way. Why am I anxious? is it because I am not on my regular schedule? Am I worried about not making the most of my time? Am I forgetting something? Did something get moved? I don't always know why I am anxious when I do this exercise but it really helps to understand myself.
Same here. I get anxious even before vacation! Even the thought of planning it: where, when, how, flights (hours, if not days searching, comparing and procrastinating.) Thinking "what am I going to do there", "it's going to be boring, I need activities", getting anxious about spending time with family and feeling tense (even though we all love each other, strange, right?). By the way, I also found that writing those thoughts and feelings does help, and some sort of plan even for the most minute tasks (I like AEppinette's advice, gives me ideas to do even more of that kind of planning.) Interested in reading other advices.
I think you'll feel better if you plan the trip. Arrange in advance with your friends to look after your home. And you don't worry about it during the trip. Write a list of places you want to visit, attractions, and what new things you want to try during your trip—for example, dishes of national cuisine or diving. The more detailed you make a list, the easier it will be for you. Also, book your accommodation, transport to the hotel, and plane tickets in advance.
