I am new and just binge read a book called Women with Attention Deficit Disorder by Sari Solden. Unbelievable! I felt like she was writing about me. This is not the first attempt I've made to get help. The last one, years ago, was a complete waste of time.
I need some good recommendations on where to go for an evaluation and treatment; preferably a specialty in adult ADHD in the Plano or North Texas area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a woman (nearly 40yo) who was just diagnosed within the past year... even in the Chicago area, I found it tremendously difficult to find someone who specializes in adult ADHD. I did a ton of reading up on my own (thanks, internet and local public library!), and presented my case to my psychiatrist, who whole-heartedly agreed with me. This also explained why the antidepressants I was on for 20 years barely helped, but a low dose of Adderall has changed my life dramatically for the better. I presented this new diagnosis to my primary care provider and my therapist, and was lucky to receive overwhelming support, and they agreed with the diagnosis!
I've since had to change doctors (insurance changed) and did not receive support. Keep looking until you find someone who "gets" it. ADHD is notoriously underdiagnosed in women (I'm guessing you know this already), and the stigma against ADHD is alive and well, unfortunately, in my opinion, but there are providers out there who are educated and supportive (although they may not specialize in adult ADHD exactly) and realize that recognizing ADHD in women has a long way to go! Don't give up. I share this because I personally wasted dozens of hours seeking an adult ADHD specialist in my area and came up completely empty-handed. I kept looking and feel fortunate to have found another psych provider who is compassionate and "gets" it, and who doesn't try to blame my symptoms on depression/anxiety (what led to me being undiagnosed my whole life until recently). I hope you have luck in finding a provider who takes your concerns seriously. They are out there. Don't give up. <3
I was diagnosed many years ago, but I thought my therapist was whacked! Two years ago I was working at an elementary school and the principal had sent out an email regarding ADHD that explained more of the symptoms that weren’t always associated with ADHD. That’s when I had my revelation. That was ME! I’ve tried many medications, but can’t really find one that helps immensely. I’ve settled on Concerta and the only reason I know it helps somewhat is the following scenario: I worked in a school library and on Friday afternoons I would have 1 class come in for the half hour. I was the only adult there and my job was to read them a book and discuss it as we went along, help them find a book they were interested in, check them out at the circulation center, and I also incorporated STEAM projects/games in that 1\2 hour. (But I also had to make sure the “runners” were still in the library, stop kids from climbing the shelves, try to stop them from pulling books off the shelf and putting them back wherever, which is no place I would be looking for it, stop them from licking each other and other things, console those who couldn’t find the best book, be the referee to decide who actually had that book first and still have fun with them all!) I always left work on Friday with a horrible headache. After starting medication, everything was still the same in the library, but I didn’t have a headache!! My suggestion to you is to visit Dr. Barbara Cohen’s website. She teaches Executive Function skills which most people with ADHD lack. There are also many ADHD life coaches. Good luck!
