hello there Wizardjames, boy it feels good to talk to someone in my age group. I'm recently diagnosed, how long for you? I was just on the computer getting ready to turn it in for the night. I've been on the computer just about all day, I was also trying to finish some paperwork to. Enough about me.

I’m 62. Diagnosed at 59 when my wife asked me about taking a simple ADHD screening questionnaire. I thought, that’s ridiculous, I don’t have ADHD. I work with sp. ed. High school students; I would know if I had ADHD. I was shocked when I saw how much that simple assessment described me. It was surprise, followed by relief to finally have an explanation for so many things. Just knowing has improved my mental health and self esteem. I now take medication which has tremendously helped my blurting things out, which always caused problems for me. It has allowed me to at least explain some of my behaviors to others (spouse, coworkers). Life sure isn’t perfect. But it’s a whole lot better than going through life wondering why I was such a #^%*-up.

hello gphill56, I'm 62 with a history of drug use. After the drugs I was still experiencing mental problems, I would get on the computer and research the effects of cocaine on your brain, and one thing led to another. ADHD has similar symptoms as depression and unfortunately I was misdiagnosed for many many years. It's good to communicate with others in common. I knew something other than depression was going on and once I was in touch with CHADD and ADDA I explained what was going on and it felt so good to get confirmation, so I'm on the right road.

thank you for your input too!

I am 66 and just retired from teaching college sociology and psychology. I have had ADD "inattentive type" for decades, if not from early childhood (along with major depression, social anxiety disorder, insomnia and more in recent years) - but few except very close family and a few friends would ever know this (and how difficult it is to manage daily life).

in reply to Packman

I've read people with ADHD are very intelligent, all of the posts who responded have something going on in their lives. I'm still trying to put my life in some kind of order you know, work, hobby, etc.. I know I need some kind of medication and I'm finally giving in to that, now that I know what I'm dealing with.

I too have a long history of depression and also drug use. I pretty much stay to myself, the very few I have spoken with tend to minimize it. I've experienced years of daily difficulties and when I would seek help I was always told it was depression. I finally made my way to CHADD, ADDA and found this online group.

I just missed the local monthly support meeting, I wanted to find out resources in my area, I'll make sure I make the next one. Also, are there ADHD advocates for support also?

thank you for responding.

Yes, I’m 63 and have struggled with ADHD all my life. The condition was only diagnosed after it was discovered that I had a 35 year addiction. Through therapy and being apart of 12 step groups & a lot of prayer...the addiction is now under control (I’ve been sober for 3 years). I’m on 30 mg of Adderall that we must take daily. I have good days and not so good days.

Hi Broken2BMadeWhole, I'm an ex user 20+ year addiction, it'll be 10 years sober in May. But nothing since that time I'm just sober. I didn't quite fit in with the 12 step groups, but I was with a Christian recovery group that worked for me. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, but it took a long long time to discover it. You know getting help for this is much easier said than done.

Thank you for responding. Talk to you soon.
