Hi there, I’m in my 6th, nearly 7th week of taking roaccutane. Was initially on 20mg, Currently on 40mg but my acne is getting 10x worse and I’m just concerned because my acne hasn’t been this bad before. It’s quite upsetting and frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.

I’d say stick with it, your skin will respond. You may just need a higher dose. The second time I took Roaccutane my skin took almost four months before I stopped breaking out. I was lucky and it didn’t ‘get worse before it got better’ but it absolutely did work. Talk to your derm at the next check up though, and good luck x

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes I’ll have a chat with the derm and tell them I’m struggling. Thank you 😊

I know it’s disheartening initially but stay with it and it will work.

Definitely stick with it as it is very common for skin to get a lot worse for the first few months. When I took Roaccutane, I experienced a significant worsening of my skin and was very tempted to stop taking it but made myself persevere as the leaflet that accompanied the medication had explained that this is to be expected before improvements are seen. I am in my 60s now, had two courses in my 30s when i was one of the first people to be given this treatment in the UK, and I still consider it a miracle drug as it transformed my skin and my life. I have a daughter in her late 20s and she has recently taken Roaccutane for 8 months and it wasn't until the 5th month that improvement was noticeable. She now gets the odd tiny spot but nothing else.
