Diaper for poop for almost 6 year old son with PDA/Autism

Hello dear parents,

I hope you understand my English, I am not native speaker.

I just want to know if there are some other children here who still do their poop in diapers only?

For me, I am autistic myself, it is triggering hard, not the fact that he does not use the toilet, it is the smell and the time, most of the time he does it late at night (he barely sleeps at night as well)

My son needs a lot of hours for his poop and sometimes it does not work and I just want to know if there are other parents struggling because I feel so overwhelmed and I really feel like I need to vomit every time I open the diaper because he is not pooping every day but if he does, there is a big amount. I hope you understand my struggle. I just need a virtual hug 😪

Hi there,Sorry this is so difficult for you!

I have a 5yo who is not potty trained at all, and was having a lot of trouble pooping--giant, difficult poops every 3-4 days.

What has really helped him is giving him a ton of fiber supplements. We get these packets that dissolve in liquid and put one in like every cup he'll drink, about 3 packets (9g) a day. After doing this for MONTHS, he is now pooping *almost* every day, still rather large but not painful.

I do have him sit on the toilet for *awhile* every night before bed, with books, in the hopes that he'll get one out before sleeping. (He never knows *when* to use the toilet, but he knows *how* to if I tell him to.)

Hope this might help you!

This is what we give him:

Culturelle Kids Probiotic + Fiber Packets (Ages 3+) - 60 Count - Digestive Health & Immune Support - Helps Restore Regularity a.co/d/8nMPDFA

Oh, and we have also started giving him a choice of apple or banana before bed as a snack--helps him sleep AND gets him extra fiber. I think this addition is what finally got it down to almost daily.

I would recommend he see a pediatric gastroenterologist and if possible a developmental behavioral pediatrician or psychologist who specializes in autism and behavioral modification. This is going to take a long time to treat and a very consistent behavior plan plus very intensive medical management of constipation.
