DRUGS AND ADHD

Hello Everyone,

My son in high school was found in possession of drugs I am 99% sure he had ADD but never got a diagnosis. We are open for medication and now its hard to find a decent doctor, so waiting for that!

My husband is not super supportive so that dint help us speed the process and I feel like my son is going to be not welcoming the thought that he had ADD, however I am tired, tired of taking this all by myself, I NEED HELP, He need HELP!!!!!!!!!

ITS EXHAUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While we wait for medication (waiting for a doctor who was recommend by someone ) may be I should try a diff doctor,

What can I do to make sure he is not involved in drugs, I mean I dont know how much he is, Dont know how to help other than I am freaking watching him like a hawk, worried, scared, tired!

Parents out there if medication is the answer please seek than early and on time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seek out a counselor privately or the mental health specialist at his h.s. My son started sneakily using pot to self medicate and sleep. I agree that ADD meds started before puberty would have helped us, too. Hang in there but maybe read up on Collaborative Problem Solving and ways to parent kids like ours. Clamping down and watching their every move will likely backfire, I’m afraid.

I would try a psychologist or psychiatrist for an evaluation to determine if he has ADD. Unfortunately, there will probably be a wait for an appointment. A psychiatrist will also have better knowledge than a general doctor on prescribing medications to do with mental health. Hope this is helpful and good luck.

So i work in the criminal justice system and "DRUGS" can mean a lot of things. We talking marijuana or heroin cuz those are very different things.

Yes, lots of mentally ill people self medicate with drugs and alcohol. Yes, forcing people to stop is near impossible.

Just love him. Have open conversation. Support but don't enable. Drugs are expensive. Cut off the funds. Boundaries. Love.

Hey...I'm not a parent. Just a 20-something with ADHD.

We are easily led. We make some weird decisions in the role model world. We find it hard to make friends and to understand what is cool.

I'm not condoning what he did... As drugs are not great. So yes, you are right to be upset.

What helped me;

Finding a purpose. Finding a good role model.

So I got a small part time job- it helped me give me a purpose and a focus. I became a lifeguard.

Then I found inspiration and worked towards that goal.

So, it moved me off the wrong things. Help down a different path.

So you know, I flunked school in the end. I then went to college a little later and became a teacher. Following this, I found a new line of work which is perfect for ADHD and that is working on the delivery of major sporting events.

I have a good wage, my MH is better and I'm doing fairly well I like to think.

Why do I say this? Sometimes the ADHD road is a little longer and more like a country road. Granted most people would of took the highway. But that's boring right?
