Any other unschoolers out there?

so much of the information and support for unschoolers seems geared for neurotypical kids/parents or those with only very mild adhd; I would really love to connect with other unschooling families who also struggle with more disruptive/problematic adhd… anyone?

I have a friend who did this with her grandson but she is not on this site. He got into riding and caring for horses and is now 15. Has not been to regular school for a couple of years.

My son is turning 5 soon. We chose to do unschooling because I know that he is on his on schedule. There are times when the logical part of his brain is completely shut off and expecting him to do school work at those times would not be helpful. My child's symptoms are similar to that of ODD. My child is not defiant for the sake of being defiant, but getting him to do a non-preffered task is impossible at times. It is not for lack of discipline, I can discipline the heck out of him, but he still won't comply.

We started "homeschooling" in June. My son loves to read. We read as much as he wants. I read to him and he reads to me. We read fiction and non-fiction. We read about animals, we read about numbers. I try to get him to play some math games sometimes, and he will if the mood strikes.

We go to the park everyday, sometimes twice a day. I had wanted him to read one book each day. Sometimes he is "too tired" or just not interested. I asked him how much he would commit to reading each day and he says "4 words."

He usually reads several books each day but if not I get him to read 4 words as per our agreement.

I consider us to be unschooling because all of the learning is done voluntarily and based on what my child is interested in.
