Our son (7) has been seeing a functional MD for the last two years and currently takes both Focus DL and GABA Trex. It’s been a game changer for us! Prior to taking those, however, he had multiple neurotransmitter test using saliva (looking at the entire HPA axis). We did food sensitivity/intolerance testing and cleaned up his diet, did a ton of work on healing his gut and then focused on the neurotransmitters. He had an intolerance to wheat, so we went totally gluten free, then focused on probiotics, probiotics and different amino acids to heal his gut from the damage of the gluten from the first 4/5 years of his life. He is a completely different kid than he was the last two years. He went from needing support in the classroom daily (last school year prior to covid shutdown), to not needing it at all this past school year. His teacher this past year said she didn’t recognize the kid that was written about in his previous IEP, it was so drastic. He can focus, is kind and warm (not irritated and easily frustrated). We were in person for elementary school the entire year, with masks. He is calmer, more positive & less anxious, and we do not see any anger outbursts (knock on wood) any more (unless he eats something he shouldn’t eat). Don’t get me wrong… He is still a seven-year-old boy and has struggles with executive functioning— it didn’t make his ADHD nonexistent. It just makes him the kid he’s designed to be, and the one I knew he always was at his core. His NWEA scores jumped to the 94th percentile by the end of this year. We are so proud of him, especially given the horrible and traumatic year we had the previous school year. It was awful for all of us, and so damaging to his self worth. I couldn’t be a bigger believer and advocate for healing the entire body. Kids do well if they can, and if they are not doing well it’s not because they are bad, it’s because they can’t— their body isn’t well enough. If you get them healthy, they can thrive. It’s a long, tedious, expensive and exhausting process, but it’s so worth it. I joke with my husband that the last time I checked, the brain and the rest of the body are connected and should be treated as such. I only hope that medicine goes in that direction. No medication can fix an unhealthy body.

I seriously loved your reply!!! I really think this is the path I need to take and it going to help drastically, I hope many others will read this and get benefited from the info. THANKS A LOT :) I truly appreciate it and going to look into this, I just need to have my husband on same page as me lol sometimes he doesn't get it. Also I am doing smartypants multivitamins and Nordic Naturals DHA fish oil for my son. I have tried tons and tons of products and I feel like these two have helped my son somewhat and I wanted to share so you or anyone else can also get benefited from these, THANKS AGAIN :)

I am looking into this option also, do you give them both in the morning? Or is the GABA Trex just for night?

We give both of them, both AM and PM. Our functional MD let’s us tweak them as we see needed, and we found the GABA Trex helpful to beep his body and brain calmer for school, as well as to settle for sleep. We give 2 Focus DL in the morning and one in the evening. Keeping in mind that these are supplements as precursors to other neurotransmitters in the body that help increase (or decrease) levels, and are different than medication. In our sons neurotransmitter and cortisol (HPA axis) testing, he has low levels of GABA, so he takes some vitamins/supplements to help promote the increase of GABA naturally, as well as the GABA Trex.

thank you for explaining, we were given medication last week but someone else told me about the Focus DL so I think we will give it a try instead. Trying my best to stay away from Pharma! Now if I could find something for my high functioning autistic son to help him with short term memory
