My son is on guanfacine and metadate cd. We started the metadata CD about 3 weeks ago. After the first week, it was really rough when it wore off....aggression, tantrums, anger. However, I got an email from his teacher that he had a great week. The second week, his strong feelings were lessened and his teacher reported another great week. We didn’t give it to him over school vacation. He’s now back on it as of Monday and we’re seeing the anger and aggression a little bit. Unfortunately with meds you have to give it time, so we will give it a couple of more weeks before we declare it no good.

I totally get that. It took me a week to work up the courage to actually give it to him. We tried all kinds of natural remedies (diet, vitamins, essential oils) and nothing worked. My son is 8 and in second grade. Some of the side effects are aggression, anger, dry mouth, stomach cramps, headaches. We’ve seen the anger and the aggression when it’s wearing off (usually around 4/4:30 each day). If he does an after school activity (karate, baseball) we don’t see the symptoms at all which is great! He had a super healthy appetite prior to taking the medications, so it’s not affecting that. I always give him a heavy breakfast because he burns through food quickly and gets hangry. He used to be a pretty heavy sleeper, but when I go in to check on him, he wakes up. So I’m not 100% sure that he’s getting restful sleep. He did just say to my husband that the medicine helps him focus in class, but he’s more angry. Ugh....of course I just talked to the nurse at the neurology office and told her everything was great!

Awwww thankyou very much dear for your response again .

Does doctor told you thatbit have any interactions with other medicines like he takes claritin or zyrtec.

My son have iep and now in inclusion setup but struggling especially in maths and comprehension .

You can say he is a slow learner and do best in one on one .

School want to put him

up in selfcontained but i deny that

Thats why today i went to neuro what to do and she upon my request wrote the medicine .

I have herad one of its side effect is its addiction

and also it stop working if used for long time .

My feelings are so down rite now .

I know, it’s so hard. Talk to the doc about interactions. I don’t really know and have no medical training. My son only takes the adhd meds and vitamins, I was thinking of starting him on GABA for anxiety (natural amino acid) but I’ll check with the doc before I do that. The meds will prob help him better focus in school. Give them a chance to work. I’ve heard from other adhd parents that it can take up to a year to find the right meds. Stimulants can be addictive, which is why the docs are so strict with filling them for only 30 days and asking you to keep a journal about behavior etc. I went to a presentation by a 16yo boy with ADHD. He was amazing. He spoke about the challenges he’d experienced before and after he was diagnosed. At 16, he’s got a good group of friends, he only takes the meds when he has a big test coming up, otherwise he uses strategies that he’s learned over the years and he’s been accepted to college. There’s hope!

My 8 year old son has been on Metadate since late November. We started him on a Saturday like the doctor suggested. That same day we noticed a night and day difference in his behavior. My son also loves to run a jump and is a ball full of energy (we call him Taz because he is so full of energy). We started him on 10mg, but as of February 14th he is on 25mg (the max a guy his size can take is 40mg). He went from being super defiant and distracted and getting in trouble in class almost everyday to either a slow start to a day and it being good or it just being good all around. I give him his meds with breakfast in the morning, which I pour into apple sauce because he cannot swallow a pill yet. By the time he gets to school they are startingto work and they last all day until late afternoon. We haven't had any out of the norm temper tantrums after the meds wore off. The things to watch out for are headaches, stomach aches, and loss of appetite. So far this medication has helped my son in so many ways and I am so glad that I finally got my husband on board with me to see that sometimes you have to make decisions like this that will benefit our son. Good luck to you and your son on this amazing journey 😄😄

My son has what is called a 504 plan in school, which is special accommodations for to help with his learning and his teacher gives him rewards for having good days. I really suggest talking to the school and setting one up or maybe an IEP which is where they get a one on one helper in the classroom. Hope all is going well :-)

I had my sons teacher sit there and tell me that his medication wasn't working and that it wasn't the right one for him, so we moved his dose up by half in February without telling her to see if she would notice any changes and it was night and day. She was kind of dumfounded when we told her, it was actually quite funny. I tend to not listen to the teacher as much any more, we just go right to the vice principle because she used to be a special education teacher so she knows where we are coming from as parents. If you feel that the teacher is not listening to you or trying to push you off, please go to the principle or vice principle or even the school psychologist, they are super helpful. Prayers for you and your munchkin :-)

My son started Metadate CD in Dec and his ADHD and ODD are under control. His teachers say he is a different child, doing his school work, much less frustration. It has done wonders for him!

So my oldest who is 12 has been in Adderall XR for 5 years and is still on a very low dosage. He is VERY active with sports and he has had no side effects. My 11 y/o on Metadate CD has also had no side effects but if he does not take it the ODD rears it’s ugly head. I am grateful that his elementary school does not give homework. But we have a routine on rare hw days that hw gets done as soon as they get through the door. I have also found that giving them multi vitamins around 4 helps too.

My son is 14 and has been on Metadate for about 2 years. He takes 30mg in the morning before school and a 5mg at lunch. We started the lunch one about a year ago when his teachers told us the medicine seemed to wear off for the afternoon classes. Works really good. Now I need to figure out what to do about his mood swings. And also his verbal outbursts. He says things without thinking. The only draw back from the meds is his appetite went down a lot

ha11 profile image
ha11

Aww thankyou for your reply.

Hope you get control of outbursts too😍😍
