Hi, we have been referred to a neuro psychologist for some working memory and executive function tests, can anyone offer any insight as to what might be involved with these?

How old is your child? My daughter was tested at 10 yrs. We went two separate days for all the tests. They gave her strings of numbers to repeat back in one test and in another she had to do a very repetitious And dull task on a computer (clicking only when a certain letter came up) to see if she could stay focused when bored (she couldn’t) The psychologist treated them all like games and even though she scored low executives function wise and was definitely way up on the ADHD scale, she scored very high on some other parts and it gave me the clearest view to date of what her strengths and weaknesses were and why. And she thought both sessions were really fun and she was disappointed when they ended.

After the test results, did this give you direction for special tutoring, how the school would intervene? I’m almost sure My grandson has a serious executive function problems.

My daughter was tested at 7. Very similar to what was stated in the reply above and similar results: Low executive functioning, high scores in other areas. It was very informative and confirmed a lot of our suspicions. The psychologist's report gave suggestions on types of therapy she might benefit from as well as things the teachers could do in the classroom to help her with focus and avoiding overstimulation. Also, the diagnosis you get from the testing is what opens the door up for the child to receive services through school. Trust your gut if it is telling you your grandson struggles with executive function. Once the test results were in, I felt like her teachers, babysitters and even we her parents treated her with more understanding and compassion. BTW, she too thought the "learning test" was fun and asked to go back and do more!

That’s amazing! I was happy she’s being thorough but I think this will be better than I thought. She seems to think his IQ is helping him cover up a few things? I think it will be worth the $$

This will help you see his strengths and well as his weaknesses or challenges. We are two years in out from getting a diagnoses of ADHD inattentive. After the first year of trying to "fix" it I realized there is nothing to fix and once i re-read our 'report" ( i could better understand this 15 page report after the year of research I did) see the positive side of my kid. This helped me understand the best school setting for my child and ensure he has the opportunity to go after his passions and interests.

Wishing you all the best
