Frustrated with adult adhd son

Frustrated parent of adult adhd step son. I'd like to understand this more so I can help him gain the independence and self esteem he needs to be able to take care of himself. He sleeps all day, stays up all night gaming. No school or job. Difficult to motivate him to clean up after himself or help around the house. How do we encourage him to want to help himself?

Can you tell me how old he is? Did he finish high school? Has he ever worked? And is he on ADHD meds? I have a 25 year old ADHD son and would be happy to share info!

He is 21. Graduated from HS, spent 2 years away at college and only made a snowball of bad decisions leading to him having to come back home. He recently started talking to a therapist and is on meds. He misses a lot of follow up appts and usually only will reschedule when he is due for a Rx refill.
